PP CS4 capture from Sony PD170
We have two Sony PD170’s and have began capturing in Premiere Pro CS4. I’m new at this so I might be missing something, but the quality that I get is pixelated and not that great. I have heard that this camera is used on ‘professional’ shoots for MTV etc, but I am not getting that from it.
Any direction on settings in Premiere Pro CS4 that would result in better looking footage? Is there a difference in firewire cables? So far I have tried capturing ‘uncompressed’ because I thought it would be the best looking, but so far no luck.

Capturing via firewire is simply data transfer with no changes made to the data other than;
1. Dropped frames
2. Dirty playback head on the camera
3. Tape defects -
Make sure you are in the right project settings: ntsc/pal dv standard or widescreen 48 kHz.

*Is there a head cleaner that you recommend or all they all the same?
*Other than cleaning the head, what can help to reduce dropped frames?
*I have the project settings:ntsc/dv widescreen 48 kHz. What about compression when ‘digitizing’? Any other settings that might be wrong?I have another PD170, that I will try to use on Monday. It has less hours and I will see if I get better quality from it.

Try to recapture the footage with your other camera.

Its a Sony camera so use a Sony cleaning tape.

So in the capture settings, I was using ‘uncompressed’. Someone who knows more than I do looked at the files. He recommended capturing with the DV compression.
That works great and is much smaller.
