Pete, you missed the “low budget” part. There is no dubbing mixer. For that matter, what is a dubbing mixer?

Thanks for the info. I will do some side by side testing and listen for artifacts. I have used a stand alone recorder before. I used a Tascam HD-P2 for my last low budget film. I don’t remember that recorder having auto leveling…which is why I’m intriged with the Marantz. Obvliously having a pro recordist would be best but I’m hoping that this auto leveling feature might be a “work around”. Someday I’ll have a real budget to work with…someday.

I’ll let you guys know what I come up with. Here’s the trailer from my last movie– https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuDY17V1vFw A shameless plug, I know. 😉

I have the new Zactuco EVF coming for my GH2. I think I’m gonna have the best DSLR setup imagineable. Now if I could only get the confusing menus memorized better.

You’d think they could just make it so you could go to a screen and click 720/60p. Anyways…I’m a bit technilogically impaired so forgive my next question but why doesn’t my 60fps footage play back in slow motion? I’m definitely shooting 60p now but it doesn’t playback in the camera in slow motion or in my editing software. What am I missing?

Thanks for the tips. I actually wasn’t joking when I suggested using a shotgun (firearm) to quiet them. A guy I know suggested using a M80 firecracker which are very loud firecrackers. I just wondered if anyone has tried that, using a loud explosive device to silence them. Maybe I’ll try that soon and let you know.

This next project of mine will have me shooting in an abandoned junkyard which I just know is going to be loud with locust. Appreciate your tips!

Thanks for the mic recommendation but even I know that a shotgun mic isn’t a magical fix-all. They still pick up sound from the sides and behind. Perhaps you’re a city boy and have never really heard the sound of a dozen locust in an Ohio field in July. It’s loud! Does anybody have experience dealing with this problem??

There’s actually a lot of older posts similar to mine so I guess I shouldn’t have asked. Thanks for the input though. I just bought a used Sennheiser ME-66 on Ebay so I should be good.

Hey Jason, good info! I recently bought a GH2 and am planning to shoot a micro-budget feature with it. I was planning to use a dual system but now…in your opinion…would it be do-able for a guy to run the camera AND record good sound using your setup? The shots would include actors walking and interacting and such. Oblviously I would need a boom operator. Would I be overwhelmed running camera, monitoring sound, oh yeah, and directing at the same time?

Also, my only other experience with sound recording was using a Tascam HD P2 recorder. Quality-wise, how far “backwards” would I be going using your setup?

Yeah that’s a cool lens that I hadn’t considered. Thanks.

Still haven’t answered my question though: will a lens made specifically for a APS sensor camera work just as good with a M4/3 sensor camera?

Get the best you can afford for sure BUT I promise you that no one is ever gonna say, “Yeah, that’s a nice video you made but too bad you didn’t use the Quadra-coated Z series F1.0 lens with glass made from the sands of the Sudan”. My point is the average viewer won’t know or care about such details.

BTW, I’m looking for the previously described lens so if you know where I can get one…;)
