I did the commercials for Harvey’s for a year: they shoot it all practically and it’s touched up in post. For instance they might not like how you can see a bit of hot pepper in a certain spot so it would have to be removed in post (or perfectly colored to a different veggy). They likely went into double overtime getting that slowmo toss up, McDonalds is notorious for 24 hour shoot days.

Are you rotating the composition or the layer inside the composition?

The composition itself will be flat even if you rotate it but the layer inside should be 3D. You’ll need to rotate it inside the comp. Typically I copy over my camera into the precomp as well to animate the extruded shapes while my mainComp can remain classic3D.

    Thanks guys,
Great points Dave. They are purchasing ‘the process’ but I would like to avoid them updating it themselves by taking the code elsewhere. If the code is hidden and the process changes it would make sense for them to come back to us for the update.

Chris, that’s what I was looking for. I’ll be reading through those links thoroughly. Thank you.

  • a link to the show opening would help

Great suggestion about Moccha. I always put off learning more about it, I’ll be checking out the Remove Module next.

    Thanks Michael

  • Since we’re still suggesting stuff:

I suppose I would double-click on each video (open it in the layer tab) and move the anchor point to the exact center of the tennis ball in each video. You’ll still have to deal with some rotation from the sounds of it but it’ll make life a lot easier with the anchor in the center.

I think if you had 2 points in each camera you could deal with rotation this way as well using an expression to collect the angle between the 2 points.

You can try saving it as a previous version and installing that version from your cloud account. The Raytrace Engine goes all the way back to CS6.

Alternatively, CC Cylinder ships with AE and might do the trick. There’s also BCC Cylinder which is not free. These options will render a LOT faster.

Once you render it out with alpha you won’t have to autotrace anything. After Effects will understand the alpha channel and your transparency from the 3D app will translate perfectly.

    Ted’s right.

There’s no need to project it onto a 2D card if the render itself is a 2D card. You can just place it in 3D space among the rest of your layers in After Effects.

Projecting some elements can help sell the shot. After Effects has the ability to do 2D & full 3D projections. Here’s a breakdown of a 3D projection in AE:

February 3, 2016 at 4:05 pm in reply to: Tracking Paint Strokes with Position, Rotation & Scale

I have but that’s more for artistic painting. The application I was thinking of was more to use with the clone tool on live action footage. I do a lot of cleanup, almost every job has some cleanup to be done. I’m used to exporting a plate, tracking it in, matching color over time and adding noise/grain It has worked well for me.

However, recently I was asked to remove logos and cleanup some old stock footage at 640×480 (up-rez’d to HD) and I had a lot of trouble with the grain and digital distortion (it was captured from DVD). Any plate I pulled from the footage was unusable because it had ‘compression’ elements baked into the image. In the end the plate had to be stabilized, painted & tracked back into the shot which still caused issues with scale/quality.

That solution worked fine but I thought it could have worked better and been a bit easier. I might be wrong and this will cause the same headaches.. If anyone succeeds at it, please post. It would be nice to have this option available when I’m faced with different types of shots.

    Thanks for the reply, Michael.
