The tape deck will only record DV 25 not DVCPRO 50.
When you shoot SD using the DVCPRO 50 codec it
actually uses more space than shooting 720p 24pN.
You can always downrez the HD footage for SD use. -
Forgot to add,
that way the PC folks can copy the info they
need to there system. I would not edit from
the FAT formatted drives. These are for
transfer and back-up only. -
If they are PC and you are MAC…
Most production people I know are
MAC & PC. I FAT format drives for
PC people. I copy from my G-raid
to the FAT formatted drive. I also
make a DVD-R back-up from each
P2 card. A lot faster than making
a bunch of BetaSP dubs…. -

I’m getting ready to capture hours of footage directly from the camera to FCP and noticed the disparity in the Sequence settings (DVCProHD 720p24 defaults to 960×720) and the capture settings (DVCProHD 720/24p defaults to 1280x 720). Will FCP play back properly this way and is this the resizing you’re talking about?

I don’t capture from tape but yes DVCPRO HD at 720p is 960×720, FCP does the re-size to 1280×720. Now when you want to export a file there are as many ways to do it as all the settings you see. You export needs will determine your export requirements. For example, if you need to provide a file to another FCP editing another section of your 720 24p show then you would export as a direct QT file. If you need to provide a file to a PC user for use in Vegas or After effects then you would need to export an RGB file using PhotoJPEG at least 95% and at 1280×720 using QT conversion. Just go and try it to see what I mean.

I am exporting PhotoJPEG QT’s at 1280×720
for external clients stock footage purposes.
Yesterday did a green screen and right after the shoot
we took best takes and exported PhotoJPEG QT’s at 1280×720
for clients use with After Effects on PC.

Yesterday I shot a greenscreen insert for a clients website.
They know After Effects and Flash.
The fact that I could immediately render them
a QuickTime file they could use was like magic.
No tape to digitize and I did it right after the
shoot will I was striking. Right before I left
they were keying it in and then said “Mike do you
have some cool video backgrounds??” It never ends…… -
Are you just shooting and handing over the tapes??
All of my shoots have been HD. Of course I am finishing
and delivering DVD’s as the final product. Plus I have
clients who want to run HD files from a Buffalo player.
The difference in quality from DV to HD is night & day. -

In this price range I feel it is.
I guess your budget will determine that.
If you are getting a large budget for a show I would
go with VariCam. If this is a spec show then the HVX might
be the way to go.An alternative to the P2 cards would be good to know? Firestore to a Laptop.
If you had 2-8 gig cards that would get you 40 min of 720p 24pN footage.
The firestore is not released yet, but the claims are 100 gigs I think.
I don’t know if I would want to be on the road shooting 100 gigs at a time
with a tethered device. And I think it only works 29.97 streaming, no native mode.
Again, shooting on the go tethered to a laptop does not sound like a lotta fun.
But you would need an external drive/laptop to dump the P2 footage to.Weather proofing would be another along with other accesories.
Many things are being developed in this area.
Anbody broadcast this stuff on Discovery 100% of the episode?
Not yet, DCI approved short B-roll segments for a show.
Their attitude is they want all the “raw tapes” in this case there
are no tapes. But you could rent a Pana 1200 DVCPRO HD deck
and dump all the P2 stuff back to a tape later on.Reccommendation for a tripod/20 foot crane.
Someone else will have to help you with this.

You mean the OIS internal?? Or the way the
camera is handheld??Has anybody shot 1080P and worked with it onfcp?
Yes in 1080 30p, FCP Studio 5.1 is released with includes
support for 1080 24pA!! I have mine on order.The whole editing process with FCP including hardware.

No you don’t…..
In the finder on the MAC,
In the contents folder you have
four folders with stuff in them.
Open each folder, highlight all the files
and then hold CTRL down and select folder info.
You can unlock the whole folder at once.
This way you only are doing it four times
plus the LASTCLIP.txt.
