Take a look at the products from Prompter People. I checked out their booth at NAB and was reasonably impressed with them. Prices are decent too.
I say “reasonably” because there’s obviously much higher quality gear out there but the price also reflects that. -

Why make digital still cameras that create files that hardly anyone can view or use?
For the same reason that manufacturers add all kinds of useless FX to camcorders instead on concentrating on improving the low light capabilities of said camcorders 🙁
IOW, who knows?…BUT it doesn’t like AC3 audio…
It does now!! From the 6.0c readme:
“You can now import video from a DVD Camcorder disc. From the File menu, choose Import, and then choose DVD Camcorder Disc. Standard and VR-mode discs are supported.” -
Vegas 6.0c was JUST announced and it appears that some of the bug fixes may help you.

First of all, get the 6.0b update for Vegas. Not saying that doing this will magically fix your problems but it’s better to have the current release.
As I see it though, your biggest problem is that the files are from a digital camera, not a video camera. This forum is one of many forums where people are trying to use and/or convert video that (I’m certain) the original coders never even thought of (Divx, & Xvid for example).
Sony is no different than any other manufacturer in releasing products that may not work with other products they build. They’re a huge organization and each division is completely separate. If I was to use your line of reasoning, I’d be complaining because Vegas couldn’t import files from their Cine Alta line of HD cameras. After all, Sony makes it so why can’t Vegas read it?
Bottom line in all of this is that Vegas is a great NLE for the formats it was originally designed for. If you try to deal with anything else, you will have to, as you’ve discovered, jump through hoops 🙁

Your machine is more than capable of playing back in real time.
Having said that though, there are a number of questions to be answered.
How many tracks are you trying to play back simultaneously?
How many of these tracks have FX applied and, if this is the case, which FX? Some are much more CPU-intensive than others.
Is your preview window set to Best-Full? If so, drop it to Preview-Auto and try again. -

Select the Wingdings font in Vegas titler. There are several different arrow styles there to choose from. I did this several times last year for construction students wanting to point out specific things on house building project videos.
