I don’t hear anything thru the m-audio headphones.

OK. Now it looks like it’s a mic problem. Dumb question but I have to ask it. Is the battery installed properly?

Based on what you’ve already tried, I’d suspect that the laptop card is bad. Is this the generic Dell soundcard or something else?
If you plug the mic directly into the M-Audio box, do you hear anything from the headphone jack? Be advised that I use the M-Audio Firewire 410 at work and have found that it’s output is not as high as I’d like.
As Gary said, did you check the battery? I know you said it’s brand new but that’s not saying the battery is 🙁

Based on your tests, my suspicions are that the sound card itself is bad.

  • I use Verbatims (because Taio Yudens aren’t available locally) and heave had great success with them.

Hey Ralph. No comments (as Edward already addressed your issue) other than to say WOW!!! Nice toy.
I’ve got a quote on an almost identical box. Now I just have to convince my wife that I’m worth it 🙂

Tinfish, glad to hear that it worked for you. Scripts are amazing tools and I use them constantly. There’s a large collection of them on the Calderwood site as well as links to numerous other scripting sites. Enjoy.

I’m sure there’s a decimal point in there somewhere

No decimal point Gary, just a sloppy typist 🙂
    The 4 was supposed to be a Shift 4, i.e. $15.

…but it also pasted the special effects and transitions…

Ah yes. I forgot to mention that “quirk”. I’ve been caught on it more than once so I should know better. The script is a great tool though and sits on my Vegas taskbar.

    Two ways to do this.
#1 (hard way). Do the Pan/Crop – Match Output Aspect sequence on the first image. Select Copy. Click the first image. Shift-click the last image. Right-click and select “Paste Event Attributes”. All images should now have this effect applied.
#2 (easy way). Download the Matchaspect script.

There’s no need for a specialized video capture card. Any generic firewire card (415 and up at Newegg) will do. The Texas Instruments chipset is preferred but that that’s almost a given in most cards these days.
