CS3 is a real tough with installing seperate products. I have had to many times to uninstall everything, using the uninstaller from adobe, and then reinstall as if no adobe CS3 products were on my computer. After you install a collection, it is better then to add on your other parts.
Good luck and sorry to say but welcome to CS3 install hell.
Trainers like myself have to get to class early as CS3 takes quite some time to install.

Layer1: a grayscale of the graphic you have
Layer2: Gradient Map (Make gradeitn White | Yellow | Orange | Red | Black)
So now should understand the beauty of gradient map.Goback to layer 1 make it solid balck. Then choose your dodge tool set it to shadows and use a custombrush that looks like clouds or a sponge. Dab over your black.
Then make another layer on top and just swirl some thin brush strokes lines, you can use the blur tool at a low setting and blur the lines since they are on their own layer.
If you have AE look into trapcode shine filter.

Great to hear you got this done. The simplify tool is truly a miracle worker. When you need a perfect elipse, it is lacking a routine that would say “hey this matches a shape illustrator has a tool for, I should replace it with a fresh vector path.

If it is over 2gb, you need to save a large document format .psb.
You must have lots of layers as 13×19 is only 64mb with no layers. Masks (8bits and comprssed)dont increase file size as much as full layer with no transparency. I often do 38 1/2 x 96 1/4″ panels for trade shows, and those files never get over 200mb, and they often contain multiple type version layers.
Make sure your document is:
1)RGB
2)not in 16 bit per channel mode
3)Turn of maximimize compatibility (MC) when the popup comes during saving files, if you are not placing your psd in another app that requires MC.
4)try saving as Photoshop PDF with max quality. Tiff LZW is nice & nonlossy, but a postscript rip amy choke on it. If your rip can handle it, use LZW.
5) Convert to CMYK only when your artwork is apporoved to go to print -
To get inner outlines only, use your original shape as a mask on top of a stoked and filled version of your path. Using the appearance palette is very very very handy if you need multiple strokes and fills.
Offset path is usefule, btu the contolr you get form adjusting the stroke values in your appearance palette is much quicker and accurate when doing revisions whiel designing.

Thanks for sharing the solution, sorry that I was away for awhile and missed your post.

One reason it may appear the result is different is that you may be working on a high res image.
When at 100% view your screen is most accurately displaying your image at 1 pixle of data to 1 pixel of screen. Lets say say you are at 10% view, then your screen is trying to display the image correct, but the interpolation may make then look darker, lighter, bolder as 10 pixles of data are crammed into 1 pixel of monitor. That is why Adobe so wisely chose the default view for effects to be 100%.
If your image is low res, your problem may be somehting I have not yet seen. If so let us know if this happens to all images with sumi-e ro just that type of image. Obviously screen shots in this case make it easier to answer your post if at all possible.

I am near certain that the raw plug in began to come for free begining with CS2, prior to that you had to purchase it to extend CS1 (an incentive to upgrade).
Check Adobes website downloads as they may have posted the plug in, that means you can legally add it to CS1, if not I woudl recomend an update to CS3 which would cost about the same as the plug in used to cost when they sold it about $250.
