This is interesting. by changing the extension is the file now an FLV? or is it just emulating an FLV?
curious.
btw, I found the plugin on my laptop under library/quicktime. it was called “FLV.component.” not sure where it originally came from.
thanks,
mike

Thanks. I was thinking even cheaper, but this is a nice option.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback.
I found out the answer to my initial question earlier. Someone had been misinformed, which is what I thought, but I do understand the limitations of a volume based system over a file based system.
The problem I’m dealing with is that this client will not spend a lot of money and the main limitation I see with xsan is that if they do not pay for each client and the server to be covered under apple care, then we need to have somebody actively managing it. those options are not really feasible from a cost standpoint. If this was a larger facility with full-time support staff, I would recommend they upgrade the xsan for the reasons listed in above posts.
Given that they can probably create a viable workflow with the facilis, I think that is the way we are leaning.
We have also learned that the overall business has a SAN they are using for other puposes and we may have a way to simply add storage to that and tie our edit systems into it. I’ll have to learn more to find out if that is viable.
thanks again.

Thanks, Nate.
So, what I’m reporting about the Facilis is not correct? It must be a volume based system but all clients have read capabilities with the partition on other clients. Is that correct?

Hi Bert.
In fact, I did buy it and I believe I was one of the first to receive it back in late April. I immediately put it to use with four days of shooting interviews for a corporate client. No b-roll.
In my tests at home before the shoot I was noticing some pixelation or artifacting (I’m not an engineer, so I’m not quite sure what the proper word is) in all modes when I was zooming, panning or tilting. In other words whenever the camera wasn’t locked down. In fact, I even had problems when the camera was locked down and somebody walked through the shot.
All this aside, it worked great for my interviews and then after I was done, I spoke with a technical guy at JVC, who told me that it should not be acting like that (whew!) and so I returned it to B&H and got a replacement.
I have not had a chance to shoot with the new one yet.
putting the above problem aside, I really like it. It is very compact and easy to use with some really nice features.
I did experience some problems using SD card readers to get the files into both my laptop and my desktop systems. From now on, I am going to transfer directly from the camera to my system via the USB out.

thanks to all for the input. I definitely like the fact that one can edit p2 footage without moving the media.

thanks.

There are some post NAB articles on it and most say the same thing, which is a repeat of features and specs. I have yet to see any user reviews, which is what I’m curious about. Seems like a great little camera, though, if you use FCP.
