It would be a lot easier to just bring your whole Premiere sequence into AE. Go to Import>Import Premiere Pro Composition in After Effects and it will launch a tool to bring your sequence into AE with all the layers synced up just fine.

Markers shouldn’t be needed. The trees themselves should have enough contrast for AE’s camera tracker to pick up detail. Again, without seeing an example of your shots, we’re just guessing.

Although, it wouldn’t take very long for you to just track a shot and plop a text layer in there or something to see how well it tracks. Be sure to follow some GOOD QUALITY tutorials on using the 3d camera tracker first though. 🙂

You can use invert to just invert the alpha instead of the RGB.
You can use Levels to do the same.
You can use that footage as an inverted alpha matte for a second copy of the layer.
You can use the Set Matte effect on a copy of the layer.

And there are probably several other ways to do it that I’m not thinking of off the top of my head.

[dylan Tucker] “I was planning on just acquiring the 3D models produced by the separate firm and was hoping after effects had enough 3D capabilities. I’m guessing that i’m wrong?”

After Effects is not a 3d application.

However, it comes with Cinema 4D Lite which renders inside AE, so that should work just fine for what you’re describing. You can link your C4D scene with your After Effects composition camera. This means that you can use AE’s built-in camera tracker to place your models on the terrain.

That being said, you might consider getting the Element 3d plugin. For what you’re doing, I suspect it will render much, much faster. There are some tutorials over at Video Copilot for placing models in a scene with Element 3d.

October 19, 2016 at 6:21 pm in reply to: Is my cpu and computer goood for after effects

[Mike Poliskey] “I’m gonna buy a new PC to work with Premiere Pro and After Effects. My budget is around 1500 $ excluding monitors. I got this config suggestion from another forum. Could you please take a look and advice if it’s ok for beginning?
    I7 6700K
    Gigabyte Z170-D3H zł
    Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250
    samsung ssd 850 pro 256
    Toshiba DT01ACA300 3TB
    GTX TITAN
    2 x Patriot Viper 4 16GB DDR4
    EVGA SuperNOVA 650 P2, 650W
    Noctua NH-D14”

I’d consider a larger power supply, but that looks pretty decent otherwise.

[Mike Poliskey] “I found some info that some cards (gtx 750 ti for example) do not support ray tracing in AE? is it something I should consider?”

No. The ray-traced renderer is considered dead by Adobe. They do not plan to develop it any further. There are some third-party plugins that use the GPU (Element 3d, Red Giant Universe, etc.), AE has a few effects that are accelerated by the GPU, and Premiere uses the GPU a lot, so worry about those things and not the ray-traced renderer.
A Titan should be plenty for most use ?

[Mike Poliskey] “…you guys mention above multiprocessing – I understand you owe two versions. But is it possible to buy v.14 yet? As I can see the last one only on adobe’s site.”

A Creative Cloud subscription includes CS6, CC, CC 2014, CC 2015, CC 2015.3, and the next release of AE (that is “coming soon”). You will be able to install all six of them on the same machine alongside each other with no issues if you have a CC subscription.

October 18, 2016 at 9:27 pm in reply to: Animating just one side of a square

[Martin Kruul] “it looks like there is no way to convert the shape”

Yes you can! In After Effects version 12.2, that feature was added!

    From this page [link]:

command for converting a parametric shape layer path to a Bezier path

You can convert a parametric path to a Bezier path after the parametric path has already been created by context-clicking (right-clicking or Control-clicking on Mac OS) the property group for the parametric path (e.g., Rectangle Path 1) and choosing the Convert To Bezier Path command from the context menu. If the parametric path is animated (keyframed), the converted Bezier path is a static path based on the parametric path at the current time; keyframes are lost.

It was a popular feature request and they implemented it for us!

The easiest thing to do would be to convert that parametric shape to a Bezier shape. Then do what Dave suggests.

October 18, 2016 at 9:05 pm in reply to: Repeaters and colour

    From this thread [link]:

Nope. They are instances of the one shape. The best you can do is have the shapes be black. Duplicate it and set the bottom layer to be white. Then change the opacity on the repeater of the black layer. This will have them Chang from black to white. Then add the colorama effect that will take the b/w gradient and change it to any colors you want.

    I hope that helps.
