Luma matte. Or key the luminance. Either way would do it. (For both questions, now that I think of it.)

If you use shatter the pieces will come rushing at you.

If they’re not rushing enough you can make the force stronger or keyframe the camera to move closer as the pieces fly.

  • The version 4 (Pro) of Invigorator has one of the options you can apply to a material that does the shadow thing.

You can make an object (or collection of objects) in the Invigorator that closely resembles something in your footage and make it a shadow catcher.

That way it looks like a shadow from your cool 3d logo is passing over the face of the Statue of Liberty. (Or whatever)

  • “It would be great to have a video tutorial demonstrating… [place your suggestion here]”

    Well, if you insist:
How to make Adobe programmers your slaves so you can get those feature requests done that you REALLY want
How to become irresistable to women/men
How to make a million dollars for doing jack squat
How to dance, dance, dance, and look good doing it
How to become an all-powerful genie (without the whole ‘trapped in a bottle’ thing)

Or, if all else fails, how about a simple, text-based How to Understand Women tutorial?

Distort your text using the water layer as a displacement map.

Play with wave world or fractal noise and create a somewhat watery black and white thingy. Put it into a its own comp.

Bring that comp into your main comp (you can hide it if you want to)
Use it as a displacement map for your letters (along with a compound blur perhaps?) and mix in some watery background. Then keyframe the displacment (and blur) from a lot to not much.

That may give you a start in the right direction.

  • That rocks. I like the baseball shirt and the trucker hat. Now if only I could get my company to pay for them somehow…
