We seem to have isolated the issue down to mainly (possibly only) occurring when we render. If you just edit without rendering the sync issue does not seem to happen. However, most of the time when we render and then playback there is initially a sync issue.

Matt – do you see the same thing on your MBP?

CTRL-U resets to the standard window layout and has no effect on result.

I’m almost positive our storage is not the problem. I should’ve mentioned it before – we have a SanMP solution using Promise SANLink’s that connect through Thunderbolt to our fibre network. Our storage is RAID 5 based and we get read/write speeds of over 250/mb sec. I’ve run several tests on the bandwidth and read/write speeds and saw nothing that would indicate this would be the issue.

Exactly. “Professional” doesn’t mean everyone does it the same way. Our workflow is better if we dump the whole tape in but this is impossible unless setting ins and outs (which takes up so much time it almost isn’t worth it). You would think two big companies could figure this out. I think we’re going to have to remember to add a 5 second buffer when shooting at the beginning of each clip.

Is this still the case with CS4? We have CS4 & CS3 and am wondering if they addressed this issue. It would be nice to be able to open a file created in CS4 in CS3.

Is this an HD project? Give us some more details on your project (what type of media, etc.)

In the meantime, here are a few suggestions that have helped me out when getting crashes working on HDV projects:

    1) Set RAM Preview to 0
    2) In project media set to “list” instead of “thumbnail”
    3) Use Veggie Toolkit to render your .VEG w/o opening Vegas:

There seems to be some sort of memory problem in Vegas 8. Hopefully that will help you get your render done.

May 23, 2008 at 1:33 am in reply to: scanning photos for HD

I’m working on a project that is heavy on images. I’ve found the motion tab in FCP to be severely lacking for scanning & panning photos but I do not have After Effects on the laptop I’m doing this project on so I’m sending all the photos to Motion.

What is the best way in Motion to create good zooms & pans? Should I create a camera and make the camera move? Should I just add keystones to the image? What have you found to work best?

You could also use the Open Office suite (free – openoffice.org) and export the Powerpoint file as .SWF and drop it right into Vegas.
