I use Chronosync to make a copy of my editing drives to a backup folder on a Drobo unit. That way FCPX doesn’t get upset if the Drobo is plugged in.

It only remembers the last points from that clip, so if you have an long I/V and use three bites – it will only remember the in and outs of the last bite.

I don’t think Larry was complaining about the problems of installing Adobe CS 6. His issues stemmed from trying to install it on more than two computers and then trying to do it remotely with Hotel wifi…

You can’t install FCP X on more than five computers of one itunes account.

[Andy Field] “The point wasn’t about Apple’s massive profits selling othe people’s stuff on iTunes. It was about taking a decade of customer good will and loyalty and tossing it in the trash and creating a product that can no longer meet the needs of a large part of an industry”

But there’s the problem. To many people – one year one – won’t look at FCP X because they are still pissed at Apple for not making FCP 8. What your really saying is “Thanks Apple for not giving us a low cost edit option” which is basically what FCP did otherwise we’d still be dealing with Avid costs ££££’s

As I was trying to explain to someone the other day. Whilst everyone might not like FCP X lets at least give them kudos for saying “what if”.

  • [Andrew Kimery] “[Michael Sanders] “Personally I don’t care what Philip Bloom – or for that matter Walter Murch – has to say. I don’t think he (that is PB) is much more than an ardent (and very good) self publicist. ”

I like hearing what other people have to say because it may provide a perspective or a nugget of information that I hadn’t experienced and/or thought of. Ultimately how I choose to operate depends on my needs but I do enjoy reading up and/or talking with other people to see what their experiences are like compared to my own.

Yes in hindsight my response was a bit harsh. It’s always interesting to hear what other people think – but i just prefer to shape my opinions from people who are doing the job day in and day out be it camera or editing or whatever.

I’m just a little bit worried by how many times over the past few years I’ve read in various places “If X say’s its no good then I mustn’t use it”.

I’ve been editing 25 years since news was cut on machine to machine Betacam suites, I know what works for me and I know how I work. So I’ll make my own decisions about what I’ll use – and I suggest the rest of you do the same.

Like everyone else I’m not sure about Apple’s direction but I do think there’s a lot more to FCP X than a lot of people believe.

IMHO FCPX is a killer for news editing.

Get the idea of audio and video tracks out of your head.

Think instead of clip relations be they audio video or graphics. What’s driving your story?

Remember the concept is storyline and connected clips.

I would lay my VO in the primary stotyline and then add my b-roll & gv’s as a connected clips IV’s go on the primary storyline and you can easily do split edits.

[Aindreas Gallagher] “Not that Grass Valley would ever have induced engineering to blanket the station in their slightly weird editing system, we never heard rumours of junkets, financial inducements or anything awful like that. oh no.”

But this sort of behaviour goes way back. When the small scandinavian satellite station I worked for moved from Camden to West Drayton there was a tender to build the station and the two main bidders were Ampex and Sony. Despite some blinding big issues that were raised beforehand the tender went to Ampex and over time it came back to bite people on the backside. The Ampex still store never worked properly and was soon replaced by a Quantel system. The Alex cap gens were soon replaced by Aston’s and eventually (only after I’d left) the ACE25’s were replaced by Sony 910’s.

I am sure there were no bribes – it was just a very sweet deal.

Oh well – wrong again thanks for the clarification.

Makes the choice even more interesting…
