Flexible Clip connections
Posted by James Ewart on October 25, 2012 at 4:19 pmcannot figure out for the life of me which key you hold down to make this work. I have an FCPX keyboard…any clues.
I love being able to select a clip in the timeline without the bloody playhead following me around.

October 25, 2012 at 4:29 pmthe command is Override Connections but it was not enabled in my FCP keyboard commands.
Yup this works…not enabled on my system either so I gave it the same top left (under the ESC) key as I never knew what it did anyway. But there should be a way of finding that command in the file menu surely.
This really is so like FCP 1 all those years ago…everyone eagerly awaiting updates and sharing as a community which is all very nice but also a little ridiculous.

October 25, 2012 at 6:20 pmI feel that this feature should be a toggle that is on or off instead of having to hold down the key while dragging.

October 25, 2012 at 6:51 pmJames, you have your own set of custom keyboard commands. That’s why. I lost mine when I reinstalled after a clean install to mountain lion. The key is standard if you’re not using custom keyboard setup.
It’s a modifier. Just like option or cmd. It’s called tilde. And it should always be the default for slipping/sliding. Actually, imo, it should always be the default all the time. I understand connections when I insert something or trim something. I want the connected clips to move as a group. But if I grab one item from the group to move it, I never want the others to move. I haven’t yet at least.

October 25, 2012 at 7:49 pmTrue. I wonder how it would take to release these updates if they didn’t have to sit around a boardroom to decide what to call these new features?
Let’s see… variable clip connections? No. Adjustable clip connections? Nah. We need something better. Hope? Change? Forward? I know, flexible! Flexible clip connections. Done.
Next, what to call the audio that you can break apart to see and actually adjust. We already have 3 ways to confuse people… expand audio, break apart audio, and view in timeline. What shall we call the forth? Maybe expand audio components? Wouldn’t audio “tracks” make more sense? Oh, yeah, right no tracks. Tracks bad. Components it is. Meeting adjourned.

October 25, 2012 at 7:58 pmI forgot show audio animation. What’s that? Audio filters and effects? I’ve never animated audio in my life.

October 25, 2012 at 8:15 pmyeah..aren’t we clever we’ve renamed everything so it takes people longer to learn and makes it sound different even though it’s the same and then we are going to slowly reintegrate all the vital editing tools we took out but call them different things.
How often am I going to use Auditions…quite often I suppose.
It’s editing like writing is writing.
it’s like changing the name of punctuation marks and calling a paragraph something else.
It’s a tool…it’s just a tool.
It’s cool is FCPX but it’s also rather immature and silly.
