because you have to de-interlace which always reduces quality, even with Frame Control you are lowing resolution and then fit 29 frames into a 24 frame space, you have to blend frames to do that.

I think that is more of a marketing statement vs real world practice.
Yes you can mix a lot of things with a FCP sequence but the question of should you is NO. You normally confirm to a single standard and framerate for the best quality and performance.
While other software handles mixing and matching all types of footage in a timeline (Premiere CS5 for example) that is not the only thing to consider for easy of editing. You have to look at the entire workflow to find what works best for you.

This is not an easy/quick conversion. 29.97i to 23.976p
Compressor can do it, you have to turn on Frame Control and set Deinterlace to BEST, You can to play with the slide and do test to see where your best results are.
There is also a product by Red Giant Software, “Frames” that does a good job.
I’m sure there is a way to do a good job in AE also. The old program Shake did a great job.
But in every case this is a very time consuming process.
The biggest question was why wasn’t the Panny set to a 23.98p frame rate. I’m pretty sure every P2 camera can handle that. Even if you shoot 720p24p on the Panny and then upres it to 1080p it would look better than any 29.97i to 24p.

Effect parameters are changed in the filters tab and not the motion tab. Don’t have those effects but are you looking in the correct place to change them.

you have it to display Wireframe and not image or image+wireframe, or if the screen is white the color is set to alpha instead of RGB. Both are changed with the button on the top (right) or hitting w.
If you are new I high recommend you get the Apple Certified Pro Training for FCP (book). Spending about 12 hours with that book with make learning so much faster.

Not doing a tape back up is flat out stupid. Even if you have a Raid 1 setup, if anything happens to the capture the entire file is lost. Makes no senses whats so every to not be recording to tape.

The answer is a faster computer and faster HD. I have a ten drive ESATA RAID 0 and I cannot pull 16 streams. The problem is if you use a more compressed codec your drives have an lighter load but the computer’s cpu in taxed more.
Sorry no cheap way to do this.

You most likely have field order issues. The Sony is probably HD interlaced which is upper first.
You also ripped the DVDs incorrectly, you should have set them to the original pixel of 720×480, this is mostly likely a lower first interlacing.
But all this is done BEFORE you start the edit. To fix it now is to mask the issue.
Try in Compressor make sure the Field Dominance is set to Progressive, turn on Frame control and set deinterlace to BEST. See if that helps.

That is the BTS crew, they are making a full length documentary about his set up. It would be cool if he is streaming it. Wonder if that is what the card taped to the front of the laptop is, an encoder. But you know he is a novice because he is using scotch tape instead of the miracle gaffers tape.
