How to integrate 23.97 & 29.97 in same project?
I will be using Final Cut Pro and After Effects on this project.
I have some footage that was captured at 23.97 progressive from a Canon D-SLR. And I have some footage captured at 29.97i from a P2 card (Panasonic).
I want the final piece to be at 23.97 progressive. I don’t know when is the best time to convert the 29.97i footage to that frame rate or exactly how to do it correctly. This footage has synced audio too.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

This is not an easy/quick conversion. 29.97i to 23.976p
Compressor can do it, you have to turn on Frame Control and set Deinterlace to BEST, You can to play with the slide and do test to see where your best results are.
There is also a product by Red Giant Software, “Frames” that does a good job.
I’m sure there is a way to do a good job in AE also. The old program Shake did a great job.
But in every case this is a very time consuming process.
The biggest question was why wasn’t the Panny set to a 23.98p frame rate. I’m pretty sure every P2 camera can handle that. Even if you shoot 720p24p on the Panny and then upres it to 1080p it would look better than any 29.97i to 24p.

Why does 1080 29.97i converted to 24P look worse that 720p upresed to 1080p?

Does Frames do a better job at rate conversion than compressor? I ask because i’ve only ever used compressor.

From what I understand, it has to do with interlaced vs progressive. I recall reading a few years back an article in a magazine – can’t remember which one it was – where they did a comparison with a dollar bill. the footage apparently looked more crisp with 720p than 1080i. So I think for your question the fact that you’re starting with interlaced footage puts you behind the mark compared to progressive, even though it is at a higher resolution – so i understand.-Grant Gomm

because you have to de-interlace which always reduces quality, even with Frame Control you are lowing resolution and then fit 29 frames into a 24 frame space, you have to blend frames to do that.

We used to use an older version of this feature when it was in Magic Bullet Editor but I have not used this app. I don’t think I have shoot or editing anything interlaced in years. I’m pretty sure that there is a trial of the software for you to run test on your footage. Normally RG just puts a RED X on the footage so you get to seeing how is works and the time it takes.
