It is a good ethical policy to pay for software you use, especially if you are making money from it. Even big companies deserve to get paid for there work.

I have had horrible experiences with LaCie’s, every one that I have owned has gone bad, I had one Extreme Big that had to be replaced twice before I just threw it out. Have gotten several that were DOA. So I stay away from them but this was several years back when they seemed to be having a QC problem. I have never own there 4 or 5 bay enclosures though.
Personally for small travel drives I buy OWC drives, between me and a couple of friends we have several dozens drives and hardly a problem among them.

the problem is not buy used it buying pre-installed software without the original disc. You don’t own the software. Hope you didn’t pay extra for the software that was on the computer.
The only fix I have seen for Compressor issues is to re-install it but as you already know you need the disc for that.

no they don’t
you need a blu-ray burner, they make external fw ones (I think there is also a replacement internal drive.
then you need software that can author blu-ray, right now for the Mac there is Toast 10 (very basic disc) and Encode that comes with Adobe Premiere software packages.

some of the background noise can be helped with Soundtrack Pro’s Noise Removal feature. Some of the things (motorcycle revving).
The idea that any sound can be removed and you are left with beautiful (or even okay) audio is a FBI movie myth.
Apple’s online tutorials has a good one on noise reduction, I think it is on the DVD that came with the software.

THere are a lot of people that will never use LaCie drives for critical data (or any data) but yes this is a problem especially if this ever happens when you are writing to or reading from the drive. a new 500 GB FW harddrive is less than a $140, how much is the data on that drive worth.

of course you can get better $/GB on the larger drives.
Remember no drive is 100%, you should always have a backup.

Understand why now.
Changing the image size is still probably why it needs to be rendered, you can test my theory if you like by dropping it into a ProRes seq set to 720×480 and see if it needs rendering. Of course this will not solve your problem but it would tell you why it is not working.
Mixing formats is never clean and easy, what Apple has always offered is RT playback but not mastering.
But I did a quick test of my own and I don’t get anything that is not at least green. DV seq on a 720×486 ProRes seq is orange, a clip is green. on a ProRes 720×480 both a clip and a DV seq is green.

Every disc that DVDSP makes can be copied.
All they need to do is copy the entire DVD to their computer and use whatever DVD burning software they have. A turn DVD needs to be formated as a UDF (DVD-ROM) and not for Mac or PC.
You can also give them the build folder (Video TS) but you/they need to remove the ,lay and .layout files from the folder before burning a disc.
What they cannot do is use DVDSP to make a copy of your disc.

adding the extra pixels takes some processing power, set the seq settings to 720×480 and that might help.
NEVER offset by 1 pixel, you will reorder the field order when you do.

Before encoding you want to finalize what you will have on the disc and whether or not you will go to a DVD-9 (dual layer disc). That way you can get the highest quality encode by using the highest possible bitrate. The TRT of all the assets, including motion menus need to be accounted for.
120 minutes on a DVD-5 can only have an average bit rate of 4.4 Mbps (most also use ac3 audio) This is too low to get top quality with a CBR encode so you would have to use a VBR 2 pass. Average 4.4 / Max 6.5 Motion set to best (if there is fast action or cutting). If you are getting an Uncompressed QT file there is no need to go through FCP, I would just bring it into Compressor. It would be much faster, the from FCP was to gain a little quality from the DVCAM if that was used.
As you can see there are little ways to make things better depending on what you are using. This is not difficult but is does take some thinking through the process.
