this is asked all the time, you cannot judge quality within FCP unless you are going out to a proper external broadcast monitor or TV.

a fast lens refers to the widest f-stop (smallest number) f2.8 is 2-stops faster than f5.6, so you can get the same expose at 1/50 sec, f2.8 and ISO of 200 as a 5.6 lens but the ISO would need to be 800.
Also in the end the wide the aperture that is used the shallower the DoF.
Side effect is fast lenses are normally considered pro lens and normally have better glass and as a whole are made better. Of course all this is why the lens cost $$$$.

I would export the clip out after the audio is merged. You got 3 layers of pointers going on. With FCP and mulicam, the cleaner the better.

Nick, the thing about comparing the native against the transcoded files is not at the start of process but at the end.
You would want to grade, composite, add graphics to a native version and compare the same process to the transcoded version. My guess would be there will be a world of difference.
Watched the House episode last night and totally see why they used it, since I’m not a House fan at all I also watched a normal episode. The entire discussion has be really good and talked about in so many places but the nice thing is from the people that did it there is a level headedness about it all, no, we are dumping film, RED is dead, type of things. Just we saw this tool and we thought it could do what we wanted it to do. And it did.
The other interesting thing is that it did not save them money, cost was the same.

The stock lens is fine for pictures, focus is not fast but you can get nice shoots. While you can shot video with it, it is not the best for video. In short, faster and fixed aperture lens, f2.8 or faster are best, under f4 are good. But these are expensive to buy.
You can mount old Nikon manual focus lenses that you can get for about $50 each on eBay with an adapter (they range from $15-80, I’m using a $15 one but I got one for each lens so it does not get removed at all.
The fist thing you need to buy is a viewfinder for the LCD, they range from about $150 to 400. Without that taking video is next to impossible for me, at least for handheld and outdoors.

NO the easiest way is to use the same HD in both places, that way there is only one project file. But if you use 2 drives whether they are FW or RAIDs, You need to have a system to keep track of the project file. If you have two FW drives and you name the drives the same and keep the file structure the same you may not get the reconnecting dialog box but I’m not 100% sure on that.
My suggest is more for keeping track, you know which file to open. So if you worked at home the night before and go in the office the next day you don’t accidentally open the older file, cause you see that it is labeled “OUT”

If you edit with media on your internal HD you edit at your own risk. If it works for you that is fine. If you are doing simple editorial editing with DVCProHD footage you are probably okay, start doing effects, multicam, and other heavy stuff and it will suffer.
Transfer speed is only as fast as your slowest drive. Two eSata drives will transfer faster then a FW800 to a Sata drive. But since you are using two buses it would transfer faster then two FW800 drives on the same bus.
eSata cable/ports do not have power going through them so there is no way for the drives to be bus powered you will always for to power it another way.

In either do you need to be working in square pixels any more. Photoshop has had aspect correction for some time now, you do need to set them up as needed. There are settings for 4:3 and widescreen, just use them. The program corrects the canvas within the app. PS gives you a lower quality image but you can toggle that on and off.
If you do design in square pixels 720×540 or 854×480 (for widescreen) they should always be resized to 720×480 before bring them into DVDSP, never let DVDSP do any resizing. But setting up the project correctly for video is always the cleanest and easiest why to do things.
