unless you are looking at the timeline rendered and out to a monitor you are not looking at final quality. the canvas down rez’s the image.
To judge quality you MUST have a video card/device out of a monitor (not a computer monitor).

No need to tell us the steps on this one, it is not an authoring issue, sound like you have an issue with the drive itself. The comment asking for more info was an “for the future” and for others. When we respond we are not just address the OP but anyone that might come across the thread.
How old is the system?
The only other thing to try is if you can find a slower DVD like 8x, but that is a long shot.

Yeah, I’m looking at the next lens I purchase and it is frustrating, most wides that are fast don’t have IS, lenses with IS are variable f-stop, unless you spend the really big bucks to get what you need. I love this industry! Spend $5K outfitting a $800 camera. But the body is always the cheapest thing you buy.

that is a possibility. You need to try to burn a DVD (any data is fine) from the fine, this will tell you if it a software or hardware issue.
Also telling me you followed the directions to a tutorial to the tee, doesn’t help me since I don’t know what the tutorial is telling you. This error is not an authoring problem so no big deal here but in the future you need to tell us what you are doing and not to leave it to us to watch or read something else.

Make sure the system drive is not RAID together with other internal drives. For your media drive I would recommend that you RAID 2 or 3 of the drives together.

Lenses for the most part should not be put into a “does not work for” category. A 70-300 is fine for video if use correctly, on a tripod and if you need a zoom. There are things that make one lenses better than the other but you have to fit the lens to the need.
With small sensor cameras like the 7D or T2i 35mm would be considered the standard focal length, similar field of view as your eyes (on film and full sensor camera this is 50mm). So anything below that is wide angle, things look push back. Above 35mm are telephoto and things look closer. Not only does the focal length change the field of view, it changes the feeling of the picture. A CU of a face that fills the same area of the viewfinder with a 50mm or a 105mm lens will feel totally different. This is why this is no absolutes with use this for that, it is artist choices, you just need to learn by experience what works for you in a given situation. This is why photography and cinematography is an art form. Everyone can get lucky and capture a beautiful picture every now and then but a professional knows how to create the look he is after.
I sure there are a bunch of stuff online that goes into lenses. If you are new to all this it would be worth our time to do the research.

the recording from the HDMI will always have all the icons and info that is on the back LCD when recording, so it is at least the red record dot. At this time there is no way to record the stream outside of the camera that is usable. This is one of the shortcomings of DSLR at this time.

Sorry for asking for you to give more info. Just trying to help. An optimal system for editing narrative ProRes material is totally different that a system for uncompressed HD. If optimal simply means the biggest and fastest no budget concerns than get the biggest and fastest MacPro, fill it with RAM, get a 6G SAS card and super fast RAID enclosure.
