I don’t think there are BluRay recorders that record a live feed. Hollywood has gone out of its way to make sure that HD signals do not get recorded. Also the ability to record a H264 HD stream would take a hoss of a system. There maybe devices out on the market but have yet to see anything like DVD-Recorder/players.

By biggest gripe about X is the use of screen real-estate. But You really have to come to grips that if you need to do color correction you need to get an external 24′ computer monitor, even with that I find everything too small. X has a 2 monitor mode but it even more frustrating screen use wide. IMO. But I believe you can send the event browser over to the 13″ and have more round for monitor and scopes on the 2nd display.

My editing it pretty light these days so I’m not saying I’m a good test but what is FCPX on the same partition breaking? I have FCP 7, FCP X and even Premiere Pro all on a Lion partition and I’m not seeing any issue but once again I’m just doing basic editing. Just curious if people are really seeing issue or if this is a suggested safe approach.

I sure they are not doing to get proper lighting either. In the end they will have to settle for low quality composites or spend more money and time. Are you doing the keying/compositing? If so make sure you are getting a /hr rate. Let them know that they are compromising quality up front. If they cannot afford more then they have to live with the results.
BTW, DSLR are not the best for green screens either better to find a used HVX200 or something like that.

I went from a Core2Duo and it the early 2011 MBP 2.2 and I saw a huge difference in all of the above. Compressor screams. I can do VBR m2v encodes right around real time. Saw a great improvement in H264 encoding also.
You can set a MBP to favor performance over battery, and it should be set to that especially when plugged in.
An iMac is cheaper and faster, bigger screen so if you didn’t need portability then it is a better system. But I can say the 2011 MBPs rock as an editing system. My old laptop went done and I needed a laptop more than a desktop so I sold my MacPro 8 core 3.0 (first gen 8-core) and this thing is on par with that system.

Well the problem is you don’t have the correct resolution. It has to be 720×480 with an aspect resolution of 1.2 (widescreen). AE handles video resolutions and aspect ratios of the pixel. No idea why you have gone done this path.
Of course your DVD players need to be set up properly also.

I figured it out. Incoming video is 1080i 29.97, set primary to 525 29.97 and then realized that I had to set the secondary on 1080i 29.97 for the downconvert to work.

You also need to download and install the free Pro Res codecs for Windows. I don’t believe they are included automatically with the QT players.

You can get by with that but AE and any graphic app wants as much RAM and processor as you can give it. You definitely should get at least 8 GB of RAM and put a 7200 RPM HD is it. Then if you can afford a faster processor go for it. It will pay off with faster rendering and more fps playback.
Do you need portability? If not get a iMac and you can add more RAM and a faster processor.

The way I do this pause in to place the command on the chapter markers. I don’t use DVDA so I can only give general advice.
The key is that you place the command on the chapter BEFORE the one you want the pause to be on. So it the pause happens at chapter marker 3, the command is entered in chapter marker 2. When the device plays through 2 it will then pause at the next marker.
Note that this action goes away if you are fast forwarding over either marker.
