The real reason (most likely) is that a 30i project cannot create change lists for the audio post if changes are made. Working in a 24p project has the advantage of generating picture change lists to allow downstream processes to track those changes and update audio as needed. This is perhaps what they are referring to as “sync”. Changes cannot generated between 30i to 24 because the +/- 1 frame adjustments would ripple each time being a nightmare…

So in this scenario, truly locking picture will be a huge time saver (and assure sync).

  • Well the START timecode column is the time of day. There is a SHOOT DATE column avaiable in headings that you can add your date as needed. That part is not automated.

Put the Mojo on the system that needs the I/0. The other system can run without the Mojo. Of course each system needs its own dongle to run at the same time.

That appears to be ADVANCED. Only one video frame is made up of two different 24p frames when stored as ADVANCED on NTSC. In the case of NORMAL, there are two.

    ADVANCED:

    AA BB BC CC DD

    NORMAL

    AA BB BC CD DD

    Avid would loge these as

A B X C D in both cases using the film/24p settings to designate ADVANCED or NORMAL. Check the CADENCE column for how the system was set when capturing (in a 24p or 23.976 project).

If you can open the FCP files in MoviePlayer on the system that has the Xpress DV product, then Avid will be able to import it.

Timewarp is part of Xpress Pro for only set speeds. By using the bin of preset I supply on the website, you will be able to render since the Fluid Film engine is in Xpress Pro.

I need to check the 30i project and step through to give you a pattern. I always thought it was field 1 when stepping, but as I said, I am rarely if ever in a 30i project to tell you right off the bat. I hope to get on a system tomorrow for a little bit on Monday- I’ll see what I can find out.

Keep in mind that the import will lose all original source timecode. You might want to consider exporting a batch log out of FCP, translate it via Avid Log Exhange and recapture.

Make sure your Fim/24p settings are set to ADVANCED when recapturing.

It is difficult to tell in a 29.97 project whether the sources are ADVANCED or NORMAL because the viewer and client monitor only show one field when advancing and both will look like 4+1. Let me see if I can come up with a recipe – I am rarely in a 29.97 project.

You can capture NORMAL over FireWire in Xpress Pro 5.1.

The handful of 30i can be converted to 24p using the chart and preset I put up on my website:

H.264 does not have a defined frane rate, it encodes to the frame rate of the source material. If your source is 24p, then your encode will be 24p.
