Any form of compression gets decompressed when going out analog or over an SDI spigot. The term codec itself comes from COmpession DECompresion. When coming off the deck, the digibeta will output a full uncompressed signal before Avid (or other system) compresses it again. The signal does not get any better quality since the quality was already defined by the first compression in the process (usually at time of acquisition). Consider HDCAM – 135MB in 3:1:1 with reduce horizontal sampling. It gets decompressed when going over the HD-SDI to be 1920 x 1080 uncompressed to be captured either uncompressed or at any DNxHD resolution.

The data rate is the same for 25i versus 25p – the only thing that changes is the frame structure being interlace versus progressive.

Entry level Unity does more than DV25 – it is all about number of seats. streams, and resolution.

Check out Magic Bullet’s “Looks” plug-in at Red Giant Software. Great lookng stuff.

  • Fixing the cadence issues is just a recapture. Once you are ready, delete the media, unlink the clips, then highlight all. Go to Clip Menu and select Modify Pulldown Phase. Set it to “A”. This will correct all the cadences for the timecodes as logged. Recapture. As far as ADVANCED or NORMAL, you will have to verify clips as you go. Start with NORMAL first.

As far as the completed composites, not much that can be done to automate that. I am surprised the jaggies weren’t noticed during the VFX process… Those will need to be judged on a per shot basis.

  • I hate to say that you most likely have issues with the captured footage. If you see jaggies on any kind of export, that is not good. Are you playing back green/green mode out to a NTSC monitor? It will be very clear there if you do.

    Questions:

Although all Pullin columns say “A”, do all the START timecodes end on :x0 and :x5?

Display the Cadence column in the bin – does it show both ADVA and NORM or all of one or the other?

It’s a bummer that shooting was not carefully done and labelled with type of pulldown used. Also a bummer that the capture process did not check after each capture.

A recapture will be needed for final output..

Cop media to a NTFS drive at work, mount and copy to your local Mac formatted drives at home. Same with projects and bins. Just be aware of mediafile structure on a Unity versus single system.

320 x 180 is a 16:9 aspect ratio, or you can do 240 x 427 depending on what final size you want to have.
