So… I’m sitting in my Advanced Non-Linear Editing Class at UNLV and my teacher is talking about final projects to the class… Basically, we have 2 final projects, one short form and one long form. Since we are all versed in Final Cut Pro already the class is mainly focused on Avid. One of our projects HAS TO be cut on Avid. The teacher has footage we can use to edit OR we can edit other shorts or shows… He just wants to make sure the script is working first. SO the reason im posting is to see if anyone has an old projects assets or an uncut short or 30min-1hr feature or show that i can somehow get ahols of to edit… To be quite honest it would be great to get more than one to benefit the entire class so we dont all have to cut the same thing and our creativity can flow.

Anyways, some feedback and possible pieces would be amazing.
    Thanks

To begin editing right away, do you have access to the tutorial footage that came with the install disks? It’s hardly feature length, but might get you by until you can acquire more.

The “Avid Editing” book has footage on the DVD.

The Editor’s Guild will sell you a VHS that has all the elements of scene from Gunsmoke on it.

There used to be a packet that had three scenes from Highlander on it along with all the ADR, sound effects, music, marked up script and how to use all of those elements. Don’t know where to find it now.

For the most part the problem with footage is that it has to be licensed.

sound like a great opportunity to get a couple of shorts done. I’d grab a camera and shoot some stuff over the weekend.
I’ve made many a movie over a weekend. If nothing else, it’s a freakin blast and highly educational.

Grinner, totally has it right! The only way to find out what works is to shoot it, then cut it. Not only does it make you a better camera dude, you now know what works better in an edit. And eventually you’ll get good enough to start asking the camera guys for shots to make your pieces better.

    Maybe i wasn’t clear enough here…

I work for a production company as a cinematographer and editor already, i just have never used AVID… I understand production and camera workand editing(film rules, structure, etc.) I just would like to give a go at someone else’s piece, besides all of the “normal” ones that are provided with editing tutorials and things like the gunsmoke, charlie grace scenes. I was trying to use something besides those, so that not only myself, but other film students have more options and variety to learn from.

With a wife, production job, and classes it’s hard to just “go shoot” something… I have alot im already shooting for other classes and work.

nothing makes a better editor than shooting.
..and nothing makes a better shooter than editing.
    Works cool like that.

It may depend on how bad ya want it.
Sounds like you have plenty of access to stock footage.
It’s a matter of setting a goal and finding ways to get there. I use to make little music videos out of whatever was in the box. I’d think of an effect and attack it with what I had in front of me. Trial and error. time in the chair.
No matter what dvds, tutorials or instructors ya hang with, you’ll have to put in the time.
