Why not conform to the camera originals (they are not uncompressed by the way, they are compressed ProRes)?

Is it a complex sequence with effects that can need to be conformed in MC and why you want to start in MC, render effects, grade MXF and return AAF to MC?

Based on the above, we can get to next step.

For starters you say 24. Is it 24.000 or 23.976? Not that it matters, but you want to keep frame rates consistent from shoot, to transcode, to Avid project type and 24 and 23.976 are not the same thing.

Assuming all that is correct, I never import the ALE for relinking. Some have success with it, but I find they can unlink over time for no reason whatsoever.

Once you copy files to MXF/1 folder, drag and drop all the AAF files into your bin (or import). Those will relink automatically. If you want to have the additional metadata from the ALE, select all the master clips created by the AAf files and merge the ALE into them.

Media Composer comes with most of the basic effects included, but is pretty limited for the more exotic or creative type FX you are referring to and is not part of the offering. That is why there is the Boris bundle to start with – to make up for that with a dedicated effects developer.

As a heavy “influencer” of MC development the first 10-15 years, I can tell you my editing background was all film working with other heavy “influencers” who were video creative editorial. The first NLE systems were really combining the ease of access that video brought (compared to film) and the non linear of aspect of film (compared to video) and bringing them together in a new way. For example, timeline replaced the EDL view common with linear control, etc. Mimicking a linear controller for finishing was never a goal as linear finishing retained its value well into the late 90’s and again with the introduction of video.

Keep your tracks as they are, do a mixdown and export with “direct out” for audio does not work for you?

Did you switch your project to an SD format before trying?

The DPX files were probably 16bit at the very last considering the R3D files are 12bits
