Nesting before applying shadow…that sounds like it might work. I don’t know why, but it just sounds like a very FCP-ey solution.
    Thanks – I’ll give it a shot!

    Thanks for the reply,
I get the flicker even with no movement, an example would be a DV clip (cropped, resized, feathered, and drop shadowed) placed over another DV clip – thats it. There is a flicker when the shadow is on, and no flicker when the shadow is off.

    Aloha,
    Thanks for looking out. We thought about that and then realized;

mod the g5 case to hold an intel board, then run a cracked intel build of os x… 🙂
no one will know the difference…

seriously though, if your HD’s are the same size, you may want to mirror them.

  • Are you creating the DVD on the smae machine as your are editing on?
If so, export a quicktime reference file (uncheck “make movie self-contained) at current settings. This will result in a tiny file that links to your original captures, renders, etc. No recompression and no big file, but it must have the original captured media present.

If not creating the DVD on the same machine, export as a QT file using current settings. This will result in a 13GB/hour file. This file can be brought directly into iDVD (although iDVD is limited to 1.5 hours I think) or it can be converted into MPEG2 (by Compressor) for use in DVD Studio Pro.

There should be no need to use FCP “Export via Quicktime Conversion”, just use the Export Quicktime and use current settings.

You are not importing the file in FCP directly from a CD are you?
If so FCP is just linking to the file on the CD and I can totally see this causing issues (especially if you remove the CD!)
    Good luck,

February 7, 2006 at 12:16 am in reply to: Capture scratch to follow project?

Yeah, capture scratch should be a “project setting” and not a “system setting”.
This would also help when cleaning up – if there is linking to media in another project – media manager would automatically “know” that a piece of media actually originated in another project and could warn you before you make it offline.
Maybe we should create a real petition, a list of 5 or 10 essential features or bugs for apple to look into. I imagine we would at least get a response if we had a 1000 FCP user clamoring for a new capture scratch setting.

  • Would Apple be the best place to buy, or from a vendor?
The prices should all be about the same.
Which G5 is best? Dual or Quad?
    Faster is always better…
I thought 2 500GB internal drives and 4GB of RAM would be OK to get started.
It will be fine. Keep your media on the secondary drive. You will get about 470GB which works out to about 36 hours of footage.
Should I buy the apple monitors or would others be better?
Apple monitors are pretty and match the G5. Plenty of other vendors make great screens as well. Try viewsonic or dell.
Any ideas on an external firewire drive?
LaCie D2 triple interface drives have worked well for us – anything with a FW800 should be good.

Try disabling the power switch on the cinema display. It is done through the system preferences – you may have to hold down the option key while opening the display preferences to see this option (I can’t remember). Those electrostatic (or whatever they are) switches on the first 20″ LCD were known to spontaneously engage leading to sleep and shutdown issues.

Try resetting the nvram – hold down apple+option+O+F while booting – this brings you to the Open Firmware screen. Type “reset-nvram” hit enter then type “reset-all”. The machine will reboot.

Trash preferences relating to sleep/screen saver/energy saving. Then go set everything to off.

    Good luck,
