SAN System Recommendations…
Aloha,
I need some suggestions on SAN’s for a small workgroup of Macs.
We have about 6TB of storage amongst FireWire drives and SCSI Arrays.
I would like to set up a NAS to back-up everything. SAN was a initial choice but cost and complexity seemed to make it *too much* of a solution for our small office. A simple huge, fault-tolerant network drive is all we need. What are the favorite companies for NAS boxes? Favorite Gigabit Switches? Favorite back-up software for OS X?
At a minimum, we would need a 16 bay array with 500GB drives. We have 3 machines, and the potential for *maybe* 2 more, so we will not have a ton of clients. A potential snag point for backing up the FW drives is that the computer they are connected to changes each night – I don’t know if there is any software that can handle this – if not, we can just make sure the drives are connected to the “correct” machine.
I have also thought about building my own NAS and using software like FreeNAS, but I am a little unsure of what setup/enclosure to use. Anybody have experience in this?
In any case, having a turnkey solution would probably make sense, after all, I want to edit video, not have to worry about my NAS.
Thanks for any advice!
