February 6, 2006 at 11:55 pmI would have to say that depending on your codec that you are using, you are trying to go past your 20 gig limit, which, by the way, is going to be way past your 20% of free drive space requirement.

February 7, 2006 at 12:07 ameghad! i was hoping that wasn’t the issue… now how am i gonna free up enough HD space?
So how much space does one need to make an uncompressed QT mov from 2 hours of a DV NTSC timeline?

February 7, 2006 at 12:15 amI would have to be it will be a very very large file if you’re going to uncompressed. Two hours of video will take up about 150 gig of drive space… Looks like you might need to invest in another drive to do this or reconsider how to output your video.
If you are going to output to DV, then it will take about 28 gig of drive space. Much easier to swallow than the uncompressed since your video will not look any better doing this anyway.

February 7, 2006 at 12:32 ami guess i really don’t need to export an uncompressed DV QT mov. The final product will be a DVD. Is this where I should export using compressor? i really am ignorant about outputing to DVD.
how would you guys get a 2hr DV NTSC timeline to DVD quickly and painlessly?
and yes another HD is on the list. thanks guys!

February 7, 2006 at 12:48 amAre you creating the DVD on the smae machine as your are editing on?
If so, export a quicktime reference file (uncheck “make movie self-contained) at current settings. This will result in a tiny file that links to your original captures, renders, etc. No recompression and no big file, but it must have the original captured media present. If not creating the DVD on the same machine, export as a QT file using current settings. This will result in a 13GB/hour file. This file can be brought directly into iDVD (although iDVD is limited to 1.5 hours I think) or it can be converted into MPEG2 (by Compressor) for use in DVD Studio Pro.
There should be no need to use FCP “Export via Quicktime Conversion”, just use the Export Quicktime and use current settings.

February 7, 2006 at 12:52 amEr, there’s no such thing as an uncompressed DV Quicktime movie. DV is, by it’s very definition, compressed 5:1. The DV codec is always compressed 5:1. If you want uncompressed, it would be called uncompressed. And, would of course take up 5 times the drive space, AND look exactly like your DV movie since you’re apparently working in DV.
If you’re encoding the DVD on your system, simply output a Final Cut Pro Movie and don’t check self contained or recompress. It’ll take about a gig and a half for the audio.
Otherwise DV takes 5 minutes per gig so you’re looking at around 24gigs. You could also just use compressor to export it to mpeg2 for DVD. If you’re using iDVD, I don’t think you can get 2 hours on a DVD, but I may be wrong.

February 8, 2006 at 3:37 amthanks guys for the help… i ended up breaking it into two dvds, but next time i’ll use the quicktime using reference file option instead of self contained movie.
