One feature I do like better with the P2 system is the ability to review more than one clip without turning off the camera and then back on.

The other clarification is that the SDI out is 1080i. I was working Universal Studios last week on a Cadillac spot with the Genesis and we decided to pull out the EX1 for a little test. We recorded HD-SDI to HD Cam SR and the settings needed to be 1080i 29:97. The DIT was switching back and forth between the two and we couldn’t believe our eyes. The Exmor CMOS chips have an amazing sensitivity level as I watched first hand from the best Sony CRT monitors available. There really isn’t any comparison to the HVX 200 as far as image is concerned. The only bad thing would be the rolling shutter.

  • If this is an important moment you need from this tape I would suggest trying a method that you may need a post house to help you with depending on the equipment you have. If you have an HDV device that has an HDMI output and a Black Magic Intensity card then you can most likely recover the image that has this dropout. I know Sony HDV devices equipped with HDMI use an error correction control that should interpolate or at least guess at what the image should be. There is not an error correction when using firewire.

    Don,
I connected my EX1 to my V1U (firewire) in VTR mode with a fresh tape loaded and then I started recording from the EX1, the V1U then started recording on its own as well EX1 controls the HDV deck), making a dub of what was being recorded to the SxS card. There is a small visual delay to the HDV recording (in my case the V1U) device. I was hoping I could record HQ and then if needed convert to HDV from the firewire port to either an HDV tape device or capture directly to FC. I haven’t mixed these formats as yet, I was just thinking this may be a solution in an earlier post.

Don I would really like to connect with you off line if you can send me a email.

    Thanks

    Don
I will need to confirm the bummer, I was also wondering if I shot/recorded HQ to the card then wanted to dig HDV to match a second camera later playing the clip, what ifanything would come out of this ilink port while doing so? I will do some futsing later tonight

Well if On Location worked for HDV then it should work with the EX1’s firewire port as it outputs the same signal as HDV. The firewire port is even labeled HDV. I’m sure you could record from this port too. I believe this port has a constantly feed. At some point today I will test my EX1 to make sure.

What FC version are you running? Has the deck been used for any DV capturing between this project, if so make sure the setting are correct to output HDV over firewire and in doing so the firewire cable needs to be disconnected before any changes will take effect.
Have you tried capture now and what is the timecode captured as this way?

    Cake and eat it too.
For around $7K I think it is possible with the Sony M25 deck together with the HD-Connect MI Convergent Design Box into your Kona card and then out of the Kona into the HD-Connect MP2 HDV coverter into the M25. An all Digital HDV to HD-SDI back to HDV round trip for about the cost of the 1500 deck. And BTW the M25 deck plays out 720p through the HDMI.
