Sony HDV-1500 and Kona 3

Panasonic AJ-HD1400 is DVCPro HD.

Sony HDV-1500 is HDV.

Whichever format you intend to shoot / master, that’s the machine you require. The two machines are not interchangeable.

In our shop, DVCPro HD is our predominant format for both shooting and mastering. So we have two AJ-HD1400’s in the shop. We also have two Sony M15U HDV decks to support playback of HDV and DVCAM, however we convert all HDV material to DVCPro HD during ingest for editing.

your post makes no sense. You just don’t get a generic HD VTR – it’s all based on what tapes your clients give you (or what camera you own). With that said, the Sony HVR-1500 is a fantastic HDV VTR, with RS422 and HD-SDI out for the Kona 3. However, you CANNOT MASTER BACK to this machine via HD-SDI. There is only a SDI input (not HD-SDI) for standard def recording. You CANNOT RECORD HD-SDI back to this VTR. (you can, but via Firewire, and this is not what you want).

So you say now “so how can I get a HD VTR for my Kona 3 for under $7000”. This is the answer – YOU CAN’T. Clark Simpson at AJA told me what HD stands for – HIGH DOLLARS.

Thanks for the reply Walter. I’m not at the stage “yet” to purchase the Panasonic AJ-HD1400. I would prefer DVC pro HD as opposed to HDV of course. Just was looking for an alternate solution without having to rent HD decks all the time. Thanks again!

Well there is no other alternative for DVCPro HD other than renting. The 1500 does you no good if you’re working in DVCPro HD.

The 1400 is the cheapest DVCPro HD deck you can purchase.

If you don’t want to work in HDV then there’s no reason to purchase the Sony 1500. Just because it has SDI does nothing for you if it’s the wrong format.

With HD if you want to purchase a deck, then you purchase the deck you need to work with your clients. You don’t just purchase one to say “I have HD capabilities” because then you’re just wasting your money.

Cake and eat it too.
For around $7K I think it is possible with the Sony M25 deck together with the HD-Connect MI Convergent Design Box into your Kona card and then out of the Kona into the HD-Connect MP2 HDV coverter into the M25. An all Digital HDV to HD-SDI back to HDV round trip for about the cost of the 1500 deck. And BTW the M25 deck plays out 720p through the HDMI.

Are both compaiable with each other Sony M25 VTR and Decklink Studio or Sony M15 also compatiable.
