The EX1 records the clips within the BPAV file on the SxS card, what is within this BPAV file is .mp4 clips. I can call this the raw material. Your MBP has the PCI Express slot so you don’t need the USB reader. You can copy the raw using your MBP to a external drive for backup and you can also copy (or not) these same files onto the MBP or just transfer the clips from the card using the XD Cam Transfer program, this will make new .mov files for use in FC. I believe you should always save the raw for archiving, if you ever need it transcoded to another codec you can copy the BPAV file back to the card and play the clips from the camera to generate a live video signal to be captured. I have found in extremely easy the give the files a job name and clip number from the camera and this will help you keep track of each project. You can also delete just the clips instead of reformatting the card so that the reader can display a name you can give the card. I like to know what card is in the reader and if you reformat the card the name is wiped off too.
As a side note you should avoid using the timecode setting for time of day or “CLOCK” as some people including myself have had issues, SONY will most likely have a firmware or software fix coming soon.

Steve, are they using the HQ files or are they recording HD-SDI to a deck?. And what about a wide angle adapter with these interior car shots? Sounds like the EX1 secret is out. Good for you on the rental, I think my investment will be recovered by spring.

Does it really take a $449.00 plugin to use the XD Cam EX1 files with Premiere? I will see if my free XD Cam Transfer software for Final Cut that makes .mov files a try first.
Thanks for the help.Michael Palmer

Well I stopped by and met the Libec folks in Torrance California today and picked up the EX1 zoom control. They started the day with 100 and for some reason they only had 7 left around 4pm EST today. They use an adapter for converting the 8 pin Sony connection to what is a standard 8 pin connector, the sensitivity rocker for the zoom seems to allow extremely slow starts and is easy to get use to. There is a record button that can also be witched for the last clip review. $299 for the controller and I purchased 2 8′ extensions cables for jib use, however there is no lock down nut provided. I still have the VariZoom ordered and I should have it soon.

The XDCAM Transfer software requires Mac OS X 10.4 and QuickTime 7. In order to import clips using XDCAM Transfer, you will also need Final Cut Pro 5. We recommend that you use Apple’s Software Update to ensure that your system is up to date, with:
MacOS X version 10.4.10 or higher (version 10.4.11 or higher is required for PDW-U1)
QuickTime version 7.2 or higher
Final Cut Pro version 5.1.4 or higher and the most recent Apple Pro Applications Update. (version 6.0.2 or higher is required for editing XDCAM EX clips.)
