It is a very good idea to label your equipment as most bestboys in the business do when checking in the rental gear. Sub-rentals may get a different color label so they can be flagged to be returned first. As for lights I recommend you use the yoke or any suitable place that doesn’t heat up. Kino’s can be anywhere. Just remember to mark every piece of gear as long as you are doing it.Good Luck

Are you planning on purchasing or renting Kino’s. In the mid 90’s I was the Gaffer on the Profiler for NBC and we had a large set with more than 50 kino flo’s and at that time the owner of kino was constantly trying to produce more lumens and the ballast kept changing every year and the rental houses would test the lights for rental by simply turning them on then off and what I found was 50 lamps that changed color temp by the minute and the DP and I would just sit back and watch it happen. I felt like a meter maid. My point here is if you are renting order a few extra ballasts and tubes, as the cathodes at the ends of these tubes over heat and it may not be seen by the $8 an hour shop tech who is testing them. If you are purchasing I would only recommend the T12 units, why? because these compact tube units IMO have too many sources and poorly design reflectors and they defeat the purpose of the original design. That is why many DP’s must use diffusion with these lights to blend the tubes as one source. And if you are purchasing I wouldn’t recommend purchasing anything but new units.

The SxS card reader is something you will need and for $259 it is worth it. Your not always going to transfer files on a laptop, so build this small cost into the package.

Here is what I know, between the two cameras there is a huge difference in the resolution size. I believe the P2 is still a native anamorphic 720p/1080i and the new EX series is a true 1920x1080p full raster HD camera. As to work flow they are essentially the same except the P2 cards won’t just insert into your laptop and you will need additional gear if you can’t use the camera for importing. The SxS cards work perfectly with the new Mac Book Pro units and so does editing in the field. I wouldn’t worry to much about rendering as this should really be done in an online suite if you’re really going to broadcast. IMO there is no comparison between the view finder, the profession jacks for TC in & out, Genlock and remote control for a paint box, and with the new firmware update true 24p out of the HD-SDI, the exchangeable lens and the frame rate controls makes the EX3 the better choice between the two. You say you are shooting with two cameras, so how much time will you say have the timecode in sync every day.

So I guess you didn’t archive the original BPAV folders from the cards? And you have the same version of Final Cut on the next computer? And is the Quick Time version the same as the last computer?
Sounds like you need to update to FC P 6.0.2 for the EX codec.

I don’t own one however I am interested in the Letus and now the Cinemek you suggested. I had correspondence with Letus today with return policy concerns and they have waived the 20% restocking fee if returned in re sellable condition within 15 days of delivery. Seems fair. Letus has the PL mount and claims their adapter works great with the EX series cameras. Cinemek does offer support as yet for the EX cameras and only 1 lens mount for Nikon. I’m in no worry to purchase one of these products. The Letus does flip the image. Do you have any thoughts?

I purchase the M-2 as well, it was a nightmare and so was dealing with the company. I gave them every opportunity to properly resolve my issues and they simply don’t have any customer service to speak of. If I where you I would pack that M-2 up and send it back if you haven’t already. I purchased it directly from RRM at NAB 08 and they knew it didn’t work properly with the EX1 (that they had there without the M-2 mounted to it) and sold it to me knowing it was for my EX1 anyway. FYI I just left a message at Letus asking about their return policy before, I need a 30 day return policy with satisfaction guaranteed before I will purchase. I’m sure it won’t be long before a single chip is introduced and perhaps it will come from Canon, check this out, it shoots HD video too
