If that is important to you then purchase or rent an adapter that flips the image before the camera. However this feature could come at a cost as it adds more optics along the way. It is too easy to flip it in the edit, and if you have a mount for an external monitor you can flip it.

The EX3 has a new enhanced view finder/onboard monitor that YES does have a switch (mirror image) to flip the image. I don’t believe this flips any other outputs for monitoring, however I have tried it as yet.

How are you handling the file transfer from cards to hard driver? Are you coping the entire BPAV folder? What versions of Clip Browser and XD Cam Transfer software are you running? You must have recorded a very long clip, how long is it?. Are the files still available on the cards? Was this from an EX1 or EX3?

IMO the EX series cameras are far superior, and the new EX3 allows for interchangeable lens and also has the professional connections to interface with other cameras for timecode in, timecode out, and can be controlled from the remote port for shading/iris control. I have been working with the EX1 since December 07 and now I have had the pleasure of working with 3-EX3 cameras on an Animal Planet series in my second season as the DP, and I can tell you these new 1/2 cmos sensors together with the higher bit rate makes a huge difference in overall image quality. Our workflow was recording HQ 1080 30p native XD Cam 35 Mbps to the cards (for backup) and in an attempt to garner even higher quality we captured live to Pro Rez 422 (with 3-Mac Pro’s using Kona cards) and with the new Convergent Design Flash XDR recording @ 100 Mbps Mpeg-2 to compact flash cards. I can tell you live capturing was great for us, it is a one step process for our post team as their workflow is now set for Pro Rez 422. The Flash XDR also worked great as I had the pleasure of testing an early unit recording from an HD-SDI live switcher as our editor attempted to construct a line cut working directly with the director for reference later in post. Even if you have the opportunity to capture live with the HVR units they will never have the same image quality. The one tradeoff is working tapeless, and I see this as a plus. If you can afford it go with the EX series units.

As Rick has said the setup you have outlined is what you will need, I can’t help but wonder why you wouldn’t or haven’t upgraded from FCP 4.5. Final Cut isn’t a good keying program even with 6.0.4, however Motion is much better. I realize you may need new hardware to properly run the latest FC Studio 2, but I can’t recommend it enough.

Can you provide more information about your system, Quicktime/FCP/XD Cam Transfer program versions and tell us how you handle the files then transferring from the cards.Good Luck

It sounds like you are using the laptop system drive and that isn’t going to work to well. Most laptop drives in G4’s are only 5400 rpm units and they can’t run Final Cut and play back video at the same time. I believe you are going to need a second external firewire drive running at 7200 rpm’s to play back the material with the G4 laptop.

I don’t believe it will as the ex3 has a button on the back of the monitor along with a peaking dial, and brightness and contrast dials. This new view finder is a huge improvement. I could be wrong and I won’t be sending my 3- ex3 and my other ex1 in until October as they are currently working.

Convergent Design’s Flash XDR compact flash recorder allows the end user to choose the compression needed for the project. Unless you plan on using the Sony HD Cam SR deck to record you won’t come close to the lower levels compression it can deliver. The compact flash design is the future of our business, and no hard drive system will ever compete with field work.

No the Nano flash is not yet available, however Mike Schell has made it clear that I will recieve the very first Nano when available. CD is currently debugging the quick time conversion and I hope I can test it before our shooting schedule is completed.
