What NLE are you using?
You said you captured these clips, capturing is when you use the camera as a deck and connect it to a capture software that re-encodes the video signal to a new digital codec. If this is what you did this could be your issue.
If you transferred the clips from the camera in their native state you need to look at your sequence setting from your NLE

Cine Gammas are a fixed advanced feature set for those that either don’t have a vector scope and/or haven’t learned how to adjust other advanced features on the camera.
I believe zebras should be set to 95-100 so you know what is clipping, thats all they are good for.
I only use the cine gammas for a quick fix because you can dial in the same (or better) look using other features including the Knee, Slope and Black Gamma in combination with the many Matrix setting to find what I believe are even better looks. Its a way to open the lower stop range from what is being suppressed by the Cine Gammas.
I use the vector scope to dial in not only my picture profile look but also help me to set my exposure.
If you have a vector scope as a feature on your field monitor you might want to spend some time working with your pp’s. This will definitely expand your dynamic range, it just takes time between each shot and/or setup.Good Luck

“So I was wondering is it better to shoot in 1080 30p XDCAM EX HD, and
just deliver in an HD file and have them convert it.”, YES this is IMHO the best workflow for you, however do whatever the client wants to keep the account.“But if they did not want to do that is it better for me to shoot in HD 1080 30p and then convert the footage to 480 60i on DV tape.”, YES again. No down side what so ever.
“It seems that you’re suggesting that shooting in 30P is the way to go in either scenario.”, YES YES YES

I would record 30p because it will most likely be exported and end up 60i as SD or HD. The big difference in recording 30p is that the entire frame is recorded at the same time. In most cases 30p is played back as 60i, but the 30p look is still visible.
You could always record 30p and use the EX1r as a deck to (output SD) during a capture.
At some point your client will come around to HD media.Good Luck

July 31, 2012 at 10:14 pm in reply to: really dumb shooting mistake… how to match high gain and low gain footage? If ever you are working with like cameras you realize you can save the setup from one to the other. Camera prep is very important. There are some 3rd party plugins available that might help you. You may want to ask this question over on the NLE forum for your workflow, but here is something to read.

Sony could have made the encoder record at even higher bit rate levels, it uses the same Mpeg-2 encoder in everything from consumer handy cams to the most expensive XD Cam units. I’m disappointed this didn’t come out much sooner and on units like the F3, FS100 and FS700. I’m sure we’ll see a replacement for the EX3 now. I’m a big believer in redundant recording and I like using my Nano Flash as my main recording source and the native files from the camera as my backup.

I have heard a few rumors about the F3 and they are just rumors. 3 days we will know……

I can’t answer that because I haven’t yet purchased the key but I did just use another F3 and I believe that option was available

Brent, the Sony PMW-100 is not the FS100 you are thinking of. It is Sony’s little surprise 4:2:2 handycam.
It goes to show that the EX series could easily be a firmware upgrade to 50Mbps codec.Good Luck
