September 29, 2012 at 3:21 pm in reply to: EX3 Firmware Install from SxS Card

Sony didn’t start out with allowing firmware updates by end users. The first update for the EX cameras was because they started selling the EX cameras before they were ready to work with their optional 60 gig hard drive system they were offering. It was this first upgrade that opened the door to the SD cards with adapters. The first firmware upgrade was the hardest it terms of finding a reliable Windows computer to install it to a second (secret) USB port under the camera (EX3) with 3 different steps that took about 45 minutes or so and during the middle of this time the camera seems to be dead. Sony launched this firmware on one of their sites by mistake and a few people shared it, and I made it work. Now Sony allows the end user to upgrade firmware by loading it on an SxS card from your computer then perform the upgrade with the card in the camera.

I have upgraded my F3 this way.

Two possible reasons I know of
If you have upgraded your firmware it most likely changed how it reads and uses the memory. I’m sure this was it. Or
If you had pulled the card before the camera was finished writing to the card you could have damaged a portion on the memory

One of the draw backs to Long GOP compression at low bit rates(25-CBR & 35-VBR) is that it has issues with quick pans. As the bit rate is increased it works just fine. Its the way the compression needs to make decisions as to what to keep. The higher the bit rate the more information it has to restore the image.
If you record to a Nano Flash you control the bit rate and compression type.

I’m not seeing it, although it is early in the morning. Have you tried the shutter at 50th and even with the shutter OFF. I’m not sure what look you want but perfectly smooth is what you’d expect from a handycam.

You might try shoot 25p at 50th, as it will record the entire frame at the exact same time and give you a slight stutter look more like film.

But the 160 has a smaller 1/3 sensor, much worse in low light. If I were looking for a 3-chip fixed lens camera the sensor size is my first concern.

I can’t remember if there is a back focus adjustment for an ex1, but if so try it, in fortunately you can’t remove that lens and look at the sensor, and I’m out of ideas. Starting to sound like it’s the sensor,

Just make sure you snap the ND filters off to insure it is
    cleared the sensor

Have you tried a full camera reset and a black balance with the lens covered?

Where is this showing up in your frame? Could it be the ND filter?

By any chance is the camera setup for the HDV codec? Or find the Genlock and see that the out put is, 24p or 60i
Perhaps your set to 24p and your monitor doesn’t accept it.

No I would NOT trade 2-EX1’s for the 200. If I’m purchasing a 3-chip camera the senor size is what I’m most concerned with and both of these cameras use the exact same sensor. If you really want 4:2:2 then get an external recorder like the Nano Flash.

From what I’m reading the PMW-200 has a fixed lens
