This MxR/SDHC combo is amazing to the point of just keeping the media right on the card and making it the archive.
I don’t know of any thing better/cheaper than hard drives at the moment and I’m going to pickup one of these readers and start stacking drives on a shelf.

I just remove the MxR from the camera and pop it into my MBP like the SxS card. That is why I purchased 6 to start. I’m going to test these by filling them up a few times and off loading them mainly for my own confidence level.
Great point about not really needing to always drag a laptop and extra drives for every shoot now. Each of my camera packages has 2-16gig and 2-8gig SxS cards, now I’ll have to get a few more SDHC cards before I’m comfortable with that idea.

Well after filling one of the 16 gig Transcend cards with family videos from last night and this morning I am happy to report the MxR/SDHC solution is working perfectly with extended .smi clips and even incomplete clips crossing over to the next card.
I do have to report that the SDHC card didn’t seem to properly lock into 1 of my 6 MxR readers and I can pull the SDHC card out while the MxR was inserted in the camera. You can push to hard when inserting the SDHC card past the point of where it should click in and then you need to pull it back manually. I just opened the other 4 MxR reader and inserted both SDHC cards into each on the readers and what I’m finding is 5 of the 6 MxR readers have a very tight fit for the SDHC cards and they all have some drag and they don’t just slip and click right into place. And 4 of them don’t fully release the card without some help. I’m hoping they loosen up over time. I wonder if other brands of SDHC cards will have different tolerances. I’m sure it will not be an issue, I will have to make sure to insert the SDHC card into the MxR and make sure it is properly locked before inserting the MxR into the camera.

The OP requested info about the EX3, perhaps you meant EX3 and not the EX1 as there are both instructional DVD’s now available from Vortex Media. I have Doug Jensen’s “Mastering the EX1” DVD set and while it doesn’t have information about the EX3 viewfinder it was essential for me as I was starting out with my first EX1 last year at this time. The EX3 features a new viewfinder with plenty of control setting that could lead you to making mistakes with the exposure. I really like the Histogram and setting the zebras to 90 to aid in my decisions of exposure. I would put up the bars and set the on board viewfinder monitor accordingly as you would calibrate any field monitor and leave it alone only adjusting the peaking after to taste for help with focus.

What will you be editing with? Final Cut?
If so you won’t really need Clip Browser unless you want to use it for coping the BPAV folder with verification. Other than that you will need to convert (re-wrap the files) to Quicktime .mov to work with a Mac using the XD cam Transfer program or the new Log and Transfer plugin for Final Cut.

NO, USB sends packets of data and it is only used to transfer data. Firewire or SDI send streams of data. I couldn’t imagine not having enough capacity using the cards. You would need two of them and as one is getting full you can switch to the second while you or someone else transfers the data to your MBP.I know these SXS card are expensive but here is a link to something you will find as an alternative.

Is this a long clip? Does it have an .SMI extension? Do you think the take started on one card them finished recording on the second card?
