I believe it is an industry standard to handle aging women with soft light from one or both sides of the camera, even the best glamour DP’s use tricks like umbrella bounce in search of the right texture of light for their models.
The a master shot you with need to rely on the makeup artist and some simple soft light and if you can control some hair lights that won’t hit there faces then it would help.
As you move into tighter work it is then you can bring layers of framed diffusion as close the these ladies as possible creating a larger source to help smooth the skin. I would make up some 4×4 frames with 250, 251 and my favorite 252 diffusion that will complement the fresnel unit. I would make sure to keep the camera lens above the eye line and remove as much light from the neck area as you possibly can using a cutter. If you must use the clip light for an eye light make sure to put it on a squeezer and wrap it with diffusion.
If the production has limited resources you can only do so much.
Good Luck

December 12, 2008 at 6:47 am in reply to: Overexposed windows, scrims, gels and tungsten lightingHere’s the long and short to your question, order some corrective gel (Nd6-9, full-1/2 CTO), use daylight balance lamps, HMI or Kino 5600k (adding 1/8-1/4 CTO to warm them if you like) or add 1/2 CTB on tungsten units you may already have, find a look by using a real monitor (again all of these were discussed by many professionals here) and decide for yourself as the person in charge what this look is going to be. This will give you the experience you need to be a DP, and the chills at night wondering if you will ever work again based on your choices for this project. You have been given the keys to success from the others here (including myself) so run with it.
And please accept my apologues as I find this forum the hardest for me to hold my emotions with concerns to those who stand at the camera without sufficient experience. Video has opened the door for too many who can afford a camcorder and what really pains me is the inexperienced people asking eliminatory questions.
I have given you my thoughts concerning your camera choice on another forum
https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/142/860852#860951
and here I find it very hard to be compassionate to those asking for advice for eliminatory DP decisions. Lighting is a timeless craft that you must work with to find the right look for every project.Good luck with your new 170 and best of luck with the windows.

December 11, 2008 at 4:29 pm in reply to: Overexposed windows, scrims, gels and tungsten lightingHMI’s generally can produce double the amount of light output of tungsten units based on the wattage of the lamp. I would not say that HMI’s have much less heat than tungsten units as the lamp head is in some cases is much hotter than tungsten units and then you have a ballast that creates heat as well. Older magnetic ballasts create a large amount of heat and need to be properly placed with sufficient ventilation so that the ballast circuit breaker doesn’t fail.
You really get what you pay for in production and so many of these posts here are from people looking for miracles when they should be hiring experience crews to produce there shows.

I haven’t had this issue with either of my Z1 or V1 cameras. Have you tried using the cleaning tape? And do you have access to another HDV device to check if the timecode is actually on the tape. You may just need your cameras tape transport adjusted. If cleaning doesn’t help you may need to bring it in for a servicing.
As for using the PD-170, you can set the Z1 to downconvert and copy over to the PD-170 by connecting firewire between the cameras yielding a letterbox, crop or squeezed DV copy that should have new timecode on it. In the Z1 menu find REC IN OUT, then find ilink conv and set to ON for DV before you connect the firewire/ilink cable.
“Should I use Firewire or S-VHS for best quality? ”
Firewire is the best solution (digital). S-VHS is video only and it is analogue.Good Luck

“What I would like to do is export back to the SxS card, place the SxS card in the EX1 camera and then play that out of the HD-SDI connector.”
“And the Flash XDR from Convergent Design is an SDI to memory card recorder – I want to go SxS OUT of the camera to a deck and/or live.”
What are you exporting SDI to? The Flash XDR does what you want the XD Cam system to do, you could even use the XDR to record the footage, then mount the cards using the CF -firewire readers and edit right from the cards, lay the sequence on the card and pop it back into the recorder and hit play. Many news stations are purchasing them for this reason and taking advantage of the ASI to microwave to piece.

Interesting as the latest Xd Cam Transfer 2.8 is said to allow for export back to SxS. https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/142/861467#861467
I don’t know how this works but it could be what you are looking for. However another solution is the Flash XDR, from Convergent Design.
