I believe there is a PL mount for the EX3 available but the you won’t take full advantage of 35mm lenses because you are working with a 1/2 sensors, you will not see the entire image from the 35mm lens. 35mm lens applied directly to the 1/2 sensor are somewhere about 3.8 times the magnification of the taking lens.

I have the Red Rock Encore adapter and I have used a PL mount with Zeiss super speed primes and with Zeiss SLR primes and the motion picture lenses are not as wide as the SLR primes, however it would be easier for a focus puller with real film lenses over the still primes.

You will need a lens adapter for your PL lenses and the Encore is a really good choice.

I was blessed to use the Zeiss lenses (courtesy of Red Rock Micro) on 2 music videos I shot and they simply are the best solution for the Encore Lens adapter system. It’s an industry standard to purchase the best glass possible and hang on to it, as it never depreciates over time.

I’m not really sure you will ever need the Red Scarlet should you purchase the Encore and the Zeiss lenses. Unless you are set on a film out you won’t really need it.

I believe Tim Patterson said that 92% of the film was shot with the EX1 camera, the of 8% was from many different sources including SD cameras.

One other method to try is to set the clocks at the exact same time, however you will need to do this many times a day as I have found the internal clocks aren’t a perfect match between cameras. Then set the TC to time of day and this should help find pieces you are looking for from your production logs.

It is ok to restore the media, you need to put it back in the camera, and the card must not be locked.

Ki-Pro?, Great idea, but a terrible design, and certainly unnecessary for anything other than projects for the big screen. The Ki-Pro has a poor design using plastic than holds heat and has a terrible removable hard drive design. IMO the Ki-Pro is really not ready for prime time. I would bet AJA is franticly redesigning a much smaller unit that offers solid state memory cards. I know CD is working on the next Nano.

There is no question you are purchasing the better camera, with it’s 1/2 chip set and enhancements over the original EX1 like the much improved view finder. If you need 6 cameras then you will most likely be shooting a multicamera project and if this is the case you really should be looking at the EX3. Jamming time code is not possible with the EX1r and this alone will save your post team hours of time. THe EX3 is a much better choice for multicamera productions, and they don’t cost that much more.

On the other hand the EX1r is extremely easy to hand hold and it has the same chip set as the EX3. At some point all networks will have minimum requirements, the EX series cameras have an outstanding imager, but the 35Mbps compression isn’t accepted by some networks. The fix this you will definitely want the invest in the Convergent Design Nano Flash. The EX cameras can deliver a 10bit uncompressed HD video signal (pre-compression) and the Nano allows you to choose your bit rate, while recording to affordable compact flash memory cards. The EX1r and the Nano will create near uncompressed HD video that any network will accept.

The i-link is only enabled for SP (HDV) and recording directly to the computer is no better than the SxS cards. However if you use the SDI port you will have 10 bit uncompressed, and for this you will need a capture card or Matrox MXO-2 with a laptop.
