Thank you very much – didn’t even know what to search for!

Stephen – I have your “Graphics and Effects” DVD and it was so helpful and your instruction method so easy to follow that I ordered Moving With Motion DVD – just came in the other day. Haven’t had a chance to open it yet but it might hold some secrets for me.
Thanks to all who replied – at least I now know to go with an effects program rather than trying to duplicate in FCP.

Based on research and input from this forum I’m confident enough to give it a shot. As part of this hardware upgrade I’m adding 8 gigs of RAM as well so all should be good.
Thanks for your input!

September 14, 2009 at 6:13 pm in reply to: How do I physically delete a clip from within the FCP browser? The way I would do it is to select everything in the current timeline, then choose MODIFY>LABEL and choose a color. All clips in your project will be changed to the color you choose – including used clips in the browser/bin – if it’s not your chosen color, it hasn’t been used in the timeline.

Not a bad price. Sounds like the best option!

No problem – thanks for the response. I suppose some of us are lucky to have jobs these days!Look at the first 30 seconds of this:

That’s somewhat the look I am going for – only continuing for a couple of minutes. Maybe it’s best to edit in FCP and then round trip to Motion for the titles? I suppose either way it will take a chunk of time unless there’s a workflow I am not aware of.

If the video looks decent on the DVD you’ve already burned. The simplest and cheapest way is via MPEG Streamclip as I outlined.
The others are correct in stating that generally you don’t want to use compressed video, but if you’re talking about a VHS tape that’s a number of years old, and you don’t have any other way of capturing the video, you won’t see any noticable degradation.

Rip the DVD VOB files to Quicktime using MPEG Streamclip (free program). Use the resulting files as you wish within FCP.

So far so good with the responses. I understand David’s comments – the 3D stuff is almost out of control. I wish we had a graphics/effects dept. That’s part of the reason I was thinking of a Digital Juice library.
For the record, I’ve got HD cameras (mostly shoot in SD, as we don’t have an HD delivery system other than the web yet), and a 30″ Apple Cinema display; 5 TB of total disk space…
The Kona card has my interest as does the 5.1 audio option, although I’m not familiar with the physical ins and outs of 5.1.
Thanks for the ideas so far!

That’s the way it works – spend it before they take it and use it on something else, like bailing out more fat cats in the banking industry!
