Posted in the Motion forum as well but I’m looking to beef up my graphics card as Motion is dragging, but my research is inconclusive as to whether the aforementioned card will fit/work in my station. I know Apple doesn’t technically support it, but I’ve read on a number of forums where people have used it sucessfully in Mac Pro 1,1 builds. System info is below – any help is appreciated. I work for a collge and returning the wrong stuff is a royal pain.

    Thanks!

I have the same system and have done the same research. I think it is safe to say the card WORKs in these system. The question is how much gain is there.

Also Motion uses three things for speed, System, RAM and Graphic Card, so you may want to up the memory also.

I’m using an Apple-OEM ATI Radeon 4870 in a 1,1 Mac Pro with no issues whatsoever. I think you’re safe to proceed.

Based on research and input from this forum I’m confident enough to give it a shot. As part of this hardware upgrade I’m adding 8 gigs of RAM as well so all should be good.

    Thanks for your input!

[Michael Sacci] “are you getting major speed increases with gpu stuff?

That’s hard to say because I upgraded form the Radeon 3870, not the stock low end nVidia card. The 4870 is noticeably quieter, but probably only a little faster for Pro Apps compared to the 3870. Both of them run circles around the stock nVidia card, however.
