I’m sure they’re trying to get more Symphony systems into the wild so they have more people buying upgrades, etc…, which gives them more R&D dollars to improve Symphony.
Will Symphony go away? Who knows. But when I bought Avid a month ago I went straight for the Symphony crossgrade – it’s compatible with Media Composer and is identical to it in every way except I had a better color correction toolset and comes with the Boris BCC plugins. No reason to spend the same amount for Media Composer and end up with less plugins and an inferior color grading toolset.
If Symphony does go away for some reason I’m sure you’ll be able to convert your Symphony license to a Media Composer license, but if anything goes away I imagine it will be Media Composer merging with Symphony.

Yep. Install it on every system and plug the dongle into the one you need to use.

New purchases are software activation only, which you can also use as a floating license. When you’re done using Symphony just open the Avid License Control and deactivate Symphony, open Symphony on the next computer and reactivate it. I like the dongle better. You can buy one from Avid Inside Sales for $300.

Yes. If you used any new features or effects in MC6 or Symphony 6 that aren’t available in MC5 they may not translate, or you may not be able to change them (for example, Symphony source side color correction will carry over to MC but you can’t change it in MC).
Otherwise, you should be fine, especially since this is just a rough cut.

When’s the last time you used Avid? They’ve taken great pains in the last few versions (starting at V4, I think) to add more FCP type functionality to their timeline with the Smart Tools.
Personally, I hate them (I like the editing modes) and turn them off but if you like direct timeline interaction they might be perfect for you. Either way, I’d be very interested to hear your thoughts on Symphony if you go that route. I’ve been all Premiere for the last few months and just bought Symphony for my home system. Too good of a deal to pass up. Looking forward to test driving CS6, too.

Go to Tools–>Markers. Select the markers you want gone and hit Delete.
I don’t think you can delete them from within a sequence- it has to be through the Marker window (formerly known as the Locator window).

I believe the Apple HDV codec is only available on a Mac with FCP or maybe Compressor installed. Google Calibrated HDV Decoder. Calibrated maked XDCam decoders and might have one for HDV as well. Install the demo if the have one and open a movie in Quicktime. If you see video reimport into Avid and you should have video there too. If that works buy the decoder, import into Avid and edit. Or have the files converted to DNxHD quicktimes by the client and sent back to you.

Glad that solved it!
I agree that there should be ways to bypass the Kona/Blackmagic outputs for audio (or video, if that would be helpful to people).

You typically listen to speakers attached directly to your Mac? That’s the issue.
With MC6.x, the Kona card is now an operating breakout box. The audio is going out through the Kona, and I don’t believe you can change that. Here are your options:
Attach speakers to the Kona. Sound!
Remove the Kona from the system. Avid will use the Mac output like you’re used to. Sound!
The reason this changed from 5.5 to 6 is that, in 5.5, Avid ignored the Kona. Now it doesn’t. I had the same issue with a Blackmagic card (currently have the issue, actually – I need to hook a mixer and speakers to the Kona).
Shut down your system, remove the Kona, reboot and start Avid. I bet you have audio playback.
