Check your effects in the effect editor and make sure you don’t have the HQ button selected.

I ran Xpress Pro 5.2 on AMD processors for a couple of months, as well as an ATI Radeon card. Not the ideal setup, and I ran into some issues (couldn’t use DV25 or DV50–the ATI card turned everything green and garbled), but otherwise it worked as expected until we could replace it with a certified machine. With the Matrox G450 you might have more luck at DV resolutions.
If you just want a system to relearn Avid on, and you’re getting this system for cheap, go for it. Just take a demo on it first (if you can) to make sure it runs well enough. The interface hasn’t changed that much between 5.2 and Media Composer 3 (Xpress is EOL as of version 5.8). Try to digitize and cut some 1:1 footage (if have a Mojo–otherwise 1:1 will be locked out on that version), cut DV50 and DV25. Export a quicktime reference and see if it plays okay–AMD processors were causing problems there at one point.
Regarding upgrading this–I can tell you Media Composer 3 won’t even launch with my AMD processors (I tried yesterday just for kicks). And 1.8GHz is pretty slow compared to todays systems, but if it’s just for training it should fit the bill.
You are getting this cheap, right? And they’re going to transfer the Avid license to your name (it will be a $100 transfer fee)? If so, you can upgrade that dongle to Media Composer for $500 if you need to in the future.

Check this out:
https://community.avid.com/forums/p/61051/342606.aspx#342606
It outlines some of the differences between the two. Overall, they’re 95% the same, if I had to guess. The other 5% are extra things available in Media Composer (keyframeable timewarps, more info above the source/record monitors, more resolutions, etc…)./

I don’t know if it’s in the newest Newscutter, but I would be surprised if it wasn’t. Newcutter and Media Composer seem to share the same code base–there have been Newscutter features that have shown up in Media Composer, and vice versa. Maybe this is one that that’s in both.
Otherwise, to quickly do what you want without having Select to Right or Select to Left, use the mouse and lasso your clips from Right to Left.
Hit Ctrl+/ or Cmd+/ on a Mac to zoom completely out of your timeline. Hold your left mouse button down and lasso all the clips and tracks you want from Left to Right (going Right to Left puts you into Trim mode). It will select all of the clips and drop you into Segment Mode (Yellow arrow, or Splice In). Now move them down, cut in your shot, relasso and move them back. Not as fast as a one button click, but pretty fast either way.

I haven’t seen Bob’s post, but he was slightly mistaken (never thought I’d get to write that!).
The NitrisDX box has hardware that captures your HD material into the DNxHD codec so you don’t have to transcode thin raster HD after you capture. This helps realtime playback, converts thin raster to full raster, and cuts down on the amount of time you spend converting your footage to a simliar codec. It also upscales your thin raster to full raster on playback, I believe.
NitrisDX does have more I/O than MojoDX–it’s all digital SD and HD, as well as analogue. MojoDX is HD and SD digital only. In addition, NitrisDX can has an input for HD and SD over SDI both, whereas MojoDX is HD or SD over the same SDI port (if I remember right). If you’re feeding both, you’ll want a patch bay, but I could be mistaken here.
From what I understand, and what I’ve seen in a demo, NitrisDX doesn’t have effect acceleration. Perhaps it will handle the thin to full raster conversions so it takes that load off the CPU, which lets the CPU and GPU process effects faster, but there is no integrated hardware to playback effects in realtime (unlike the old Symphony Meridien systems that had the Ultimatte hardware chip to play back keys realtime).
Otherwise, it’s an I/O with hardware based transcoding power. If you’re working all file based and don’t capture your material, though, you won’t see much benefit from it. Capture your HD material over SDI and you will.

October 10, 2008 at 7:42 pm in reply to: Help – Trying to save project, imported under incorrect settingsThere shouldn’t be any reason to have to back up your project or media. This is stuff Avid has been doing and doing well for years.
To play it safe, just select all the clips you imported wrong but don’t delete the media. Choose Batch capture, All Clips (not Offline Only), check “Use Current Import Settings”, change your import settings so your footage/graphics will be imported correctly, and hit Import.
Done.
All this does is keep your original media there and reimport it, relinking your stuff to the newely imported media. If you need to go back, you should be able to delete the new media and relink to the old media (which will still be there since you aren’t deleting it).
To play it safe, try it with one or two clips. If it works, do the rest.

October 10, 2008 at 6:24 pm in reply to: Help – Trying to save project, imported under incorrect settingsYou imported footage/graphics and had it set wrong–do you still have the original footage/graphics? If so, you can Batch Import. You select all of the clips/graphics that you imported wrong and do 1 of 2 things:
Delete the media but keep the Master Clips and/or Effect Clips (they’re effect clips if they have an alpha channel). This throws them all offline. Select them all and do a Batch Import (it’s under Clip or Bin or Special menu, can’t remember exactly which). Choose Offline Only and a box will pop up.
Set your resolution, the drive they’re going to, and check the “Override clip settings with current settings” option, then click the “Current Settings” button and change them to the right import settings.
If all the imported clips/graphics are in the same place on your drive as when you initially imported them just hit Import and it will batch import and update your timeline. If they’ve moved, you’ll need to click the ones that have a question mark next to them in the Import box, then click the Set File Location. Navigate to where the file now lives and hit Ok. Repeat with all files with a question mark. When you’re done, hit Import.
Done!

[Naiche Lujan] “i can’t get the pan and scan to change the ease in & out settings”
I assume you mean Pan and Zoom and you’re using it on still images? Pan and Scan is for video and doesn’t typically require keyframes.
If you do mean Pan and Zoom, set your Ease In/Ease Out parameters to whatever you want (linear, maybe) before you set your keyframes. I don’t know why it doesn’t work if you set them afterwards, but if you set your options before you set your keyframes it takes.

[Ron Lindeboom] “(I am NOT the warmest and fuzziest human being you will ever meet. But I am very fair and try to treat our people with respect.)”
Ron, I think you bring up a really great point here. Your boss doesn’t have to be your friend, but they should respect you and treat you fairly. If they do, and you still hate doing personal projects on the clock, definitely start looking around because the respect obviously isn’t flowing both ways.
I’ve worked for people I would never hang out with or even want to have a beer with after work, but they were fair and respectful to their employees so I did the best damn job I could every time. As their employee I owed them my best. I respected them. I get the feeling you don’t respect your boss, and that’s poison to an employer/employee relationship.
An honest conversation between you and your employers could go a long way to clearing the air and addressing your grievances. But if just don’t respect your boss, start looking for employment elsewhere, because it won’t get any better.
