Moment of truth. This is my first project with Avid, but I need a couple basic tips before I render.

    1. How to crop(or maybe zoom in on) a clip/image (either in entirety or with keyframes over time). Only need the basics, I don’t even know where this function is. Can probably figure the rest out once pointed to the right place.
    2. How do I change the aspect ratio. The images I imported are being stretched to fill frame and of course that is not what I want. I suppose I can reformat them to the correct dimensions in an image editor, but would rather learn how it’s done in Avid.

    Thanks

    1. Zoom into Video or Picture? If video, Resize or Picture in Picture or 3D Warp (look in your effects palette under Blend and Image categories).

If pictures: Avid Pan and Zoom (under Image, maybe?). Read the help files on how to use it–it will let you zoom in on a hi resolution pic. Blowing it up in Avid using Resize/PIP/3D Warp won’t work for this.

    2. Change your import settings. Instead of choosing 601/Non-Square, choose Square Maintain or Square/Resize (or something like that–the third and forth options in the first box of your Import dialog box).

    2. If you can’t reimport etc use the filters in the reformat tab. I like the pan and scan filter, as it is easy to use and does a great job, but all of the filters have their use….that said, as Michael stated, the best way to do this is upon import or capture.

Sorry for taking long to respond. thanks for the advice.

It took me a while to figure out the pan and scan tool, not very intuitive. but it worked out. resize is working just great for zooming in a little.

for some reason i can’t get the pan and scan to change the ease in & out settings, though. if i choose linear or constant, the image still eases. I am probably just not fluent in the filter yet, and am missing a necessary setting.

again, thanks, got the project out by deadline!

I assume you mean Pan and Zoom and you’re using it on still images? Pan and Scan is for video and doesn’t typically require keyframes.

If you do mean Pan and Zoom, set your Ease In/Ease Out parameters to whatever you want (linear, maybe) before you set your keyframes. I don’t know why it doesn’t work if you set them afterwards, but if you set your options before you set your keyframes it takes.

    Michael.
