    HELP!

I am experiencing serious growing pains. I have recently switched to Avid and am going through a crash course, in which I have crashed a few times already.

I was playing with the various import settings while trying to import images at the correct aspect ratios. And because I’m so used to my editing system “auto-detecting” the proper settings for footage, I imported all my footage at the incorrect settings, square instead of non-square. (In this process I have learned to create import presets for each type of content so I don’t have to change it each time I import)

Well, if I had noticed at the beginning of the project, no big deal, I could just reimport. But I did not notice until I had cut and exported the final product that there was something wrong. OMG.

I am hoping there is a way to reimport and “relink” the files so that I don’t have to redo the piece. I assume there is no way to change the properties after import. But I guess I could use the Resize effect. Please tell me there is a way to save this.

    Thanks

I think I’m just going to use “Resize” on this project. Not ideal, but it’s going to work, just exported a sequence and it looks fine.

But if there is another way, I would still like to know.

    Thanks

You imported footage/graphics and had it set wrong–do you still have the original footage/graphics? If so, you can Batch Import. You select all of the clips/graphics that you imported wrong and do 1 of 2 things:

Delete the media but keep the Master Clips and/or Effect Clips (they’re effect clips if they have an alpha channel). This throws them all offline. Select them all and do a Batch Import (it’s under Clip or Bin or Special menu, can’t remember exactly which). Choose Offline Only and a box will pop up.

Set your resolution, the drive they’re going to, and check the “Override clip settings with current settings” option, then click the “Current Settings” button and change them to the right import settings.

If all the imported clips/graphics are in the same place on your drive as when you initially imported them just hit Import and it will batch import and update your timeline. If they’ve moved, you’ll need to click the ones that have a question mark next to them in the Import box, then click the Set File Location. Navigate to where the file now lives and hit Ok. Repeat with all files with a question mark. When you’re done, hit Import.

    Done!

Yes I have all of the footage and it’s still in the same place.
That’s a lot of info, I hope I can follow those steps.

Should I backup the project and media first? I don’t want to screw up and lose everything…

    Thanks

There shouldn’t be any reason to have to back up your project or media. This is stuff Avid has been doing and doing well for years.

To play it safe, just select all the clips you imported wrong but don’t delete the media. Choose Batch capture, All Clips (not Offline Only), check “Use Current Import Settings”, change your import settings so your footage/graphics will be imported correctly, and hit Import.

    Done.

All this does is keep your original media there and reimport it, relinking your stuff to the newely imported media. If you need to go back, you should be able to delete the new media and relink to the old media (which will still be there since you aren’t deleting it).

To play it safe, try it with one or two clips. If it works, do the rest.

    Michael.
