That said, anyone who “hates” corporations in general is silly. That’s like hating highways or airplanes. Each is unique and should be liked or not on its own merits.
I think the one thing that most people appreciate is that Apple has generally created some really wonderful products that people enjoy using. They look cool and work pretty damn well. And they are often groundbreaking.
That probably goes a long way towards excusing/ignoring some of the negative impacts that are part and parcel of being a large multinational corporation.

June 15, 2012 at 6:45 pm in reply to: Unfixable, Unhackable, Untenable. An iFixit Op-ed.Whoa. This is a TOUGH crowd.
I’ve owned 5 apple laptops (and 6 desktops). Aside from adding more RAM and adding a larger hard drive, what more is there to do? If you are at the point where you need more RAM, a new drive and a card–well, time to get a new laptop methinks. 2-3 years for a laptop or tower is about it these days. I’ve still got plenty of old boxes and laptops kicking around but geez, the performance and OS gains leave me with no desire to work on a 5 year old system. Spending an extra $500-$1,000 to upgrade them seems like throwing good money after bad.
The new MBP Retina seems like a pretty screaming machine. But it is a comprise between features, performance and “fixability.” Not perfect. A compromise. I’m good for now (just got two new MBPs in November) but for my workflow needs, the new feature/performance set seem pretty nice—and worth the compromise.
The only real bummer is that you have to max out the RAM upfront and AAPL RAM is much pricier than OWC.
Okay. Let the haters hate and the flamers flame. Apple=Satan.

Strange. But—have you checked your background rending tasks? If it is still doing stuff–rendering, analyzing, etc.—it won’t let you quit. It should however bring up an alert that tells you that.

As far as performance on FCPX, your current MBP may be fine—it really depends on the types of projects. Assume your media will be on a fast external volume via T-bolt or Esata and you may be okay for the types of videos you are working with. If everything gets transcoded to Apple Pro Res and you projects are smallish and straightforward, I bet you will happy.
On the other hand, if you are adding a lot of filers, or keying, or using very high bit rate formats, you may run into problems. My advice: save your bucks until a project forces you to make a choice.
On the other hand, the new MBP looks terrific and will be a good investment. Sounds like a ‘like to have” not “need to have” for your particular situation.
New iMacs may be coming before year’s end. SInce you are not in a “paid/client” situation, you have the luxury of time.

I have gotten support from them via email in the past.
Try:
greg@intelligentassistance.com
Sometimes the app hangs a bit with nothing before it sees all mounted volumes. In the interim, I’m pretty sure you can drag the events and project to a “not in use” folder on the same volume, and then drag them
back to the events/projects folders (on the same volume) until you can get Event Manager X working again. It’s a great little app and a steal at the price.

June 12, 2012 at 11:15 pm in reply to: Apple Confirms New Mac Pros and iMacs in 2013-ForbesWell, Timothy…Apple has always been different since it has always been centered on the cult of personality: to wit, Steve Jobs. There was really no one other than he to represent the company. There is no well known Apple spokesman or flack. He was it. And he was one tight-lipped SOB. Aside from the infrequent cryptic official statements to the press (like today) or the very rare Jobs’ email, that was and is all we would ever get.
Seems like Tim Cook is following the Apple/Jobs model.
Nothing about this seems any different on Apple’s part as I have followed lo these many years. The only change is that we all really, really want our screaming new macs NOW! Especially after the pre-WWDC blog hype. I agree, I was bummed a ton. But in retrospect, I have only myself to blame. Now it looks like I/we have to wait another 6-18 months. Or, move everything to another platform. Neither option is a good one.

June 12, 2012 at 10:29 pm in reply to: Apple Confirms New Mac Pros and iMacs in 2013-ForbesHmm. Not so much. They generally provide EBITDA guidance that is on the low end so they can beat it on the call. I’ve NEVER heard AAPL talk prospectively about any future products or categories other than vague blandishments–we’re excited about the space, etc.
I’ve been buying their products for 20 years and buying their stock for 10 years and this is how they roll. It has worked out great professionally and financially. For them and for me.
Most corporate flacks are purposefully vague until products are ready to ship (unless it’s the RED camera–and then it never ships!). Large corporations in our industry–Sony, Canon, Panasonic, Apple–are always tight lipped about new products.
Did anyone know the specs for the F3 before it launched? The C300? There may be little leaks a few weeks out, but that is exactly the same kind of stuff we are talking about here.
Information is power and corporations don’t let it out until it is in their interest to do so. The competition is intense. I don’t feel sorry for them. I’m just not surprised by any of this. I’d love Apple to give us all a clearcut roadmap signed by Tim Cook. Not gonna happen.
