July 24, 2011 at 6:24 pm in reply to: time lapse with a panasonic HMC 150 and editing in FCPWhat’s “choppy” about it? I shoot timelapse with a 150 almost every weekend (for weddings) and they look fantastic. Have you rendered after changing the speed?

yeah…those are the defaults…. unfortunately I have the short bluetooth keyboard (stupid iMac!) that doesn’t come with all those fancy keys…. 🙂
That being said, I do know how to remap them to something that should work (i.e. shift+up/down….or just up/down). The problem is that, even after remapping the shortcut, it doesn’t actually move the playhead (or, as Adobe likes to call it, the CTI). The only thing that moves is the scroll bar on the timeline.

*I’m using CS5 on a Mac……in case that makes a difference

July 14, 2011 at 3:06 pm in reply to: How Do You Get That Silent Film Pulsing Look in FCP?Check out the guys over at https://www.Cinegrain.com. They have actual 8mm film stock (or 16mm, 35mm, light leaks….a TON of cool stuff) that you can overlay on ANYTHING. It’ll give you that super awesome film grain and make your stuff look legit.

June 23, 2011 at 11:29 pm in reply to: AVCHD workflow fcp (copy then log and transfer later)yes.
But you’re not limited to ingesting one “card” (folder) at a time. You can bring them all in at once. FCP sees it just like if the files were still on the cards -provided you followed Shane’s tutorial advice and kept all directory structures intact when you copied the card to your “master” folder.
For example:
I shoot a wedding almost every weekend. With 2 cameras over the course of 8-10hrs we fill up two 32GB cards, and sometimes more. When I transfer the cards to my drive, I create a master folder (that I just label “AVCHD”) and each card goes into it’s own folder within my AVCHD folder. So, two cards, two folders (I just number them sequentially-1, 2, etc.)The numbered folder containing the contents of each card transfers into FCP as it’s reel name. So feel free to name the folder whatever makes sense for that project. Just don’t RENAME anything (folders, clips, etc) destructively in the finder, otherwise you shoot yourself in the foot should you need to reimport later down the road……

You shouldn’t have to go through this “CUT” clip step if you have your cameras set up correctly….
Sync both camera’s timecode, either via jam-sync (setting both cams to free run TC @ time of day) or have some master-slave TC relationship via external timecode source.
When you bring in to FCP, use the “create mulitclip sequence” command rather than simply the “create multiclip”. If you sync them via TC, the multiclip sequence command creates an entire sequence and sets each clip/mulitclip (depending on the sync of the clips) at the proper time on the timeline. So if there were starts and stops and breaks in-between clips, the same breaks will carry over into your timeline.

Thanks Jon. I was looking at that one too….. I am wondering though, what are the major differences between the SR5 and the SR4 that kicks the price up $1000? (besides the extra drive slot)
…..But if that would be easier to explain over the phone, let me know, and I’ll give you a call. 🙂

yes, FW 800 has been fast enough for thus far. I actually have almost 6TB’s in external FW HDD’s already daisy chained together. And, while this has worked, I definitely need to move to a more efficient solution.

June 7, 2011 at 9:19 pm in reply to: making keyboard shortcuts Favorited batched effectsFinal cut will allow you up to 9 keyboard shortcuts for video filter favorites.
I put a number in front of my fav filter names so I can set which filter correlates to which shortcut number… (e.g. “1- Color Corrector 3-way” with the shortcut alt-command-1) .
It WON’T however let you shortcut folders of favorites, just individual filters. Still, I find that for the majority of repeated effects I use the most to be those 9. Certainly saves a lot of time roaming the mouse around looking through drop-down menus….
