December 8, 2016 at 7:12 pm in reply to: Keyboard Shortcut to Switch Panels

    Hi Ron,

I too experienced a similar frustration this morning after firing up the new 2017 release. I have long used the “shift+(digit)” shortcut for switching between panels, timelines, etc. Somehow, those shortcuts were removed from my preferences in the upgrade. I found all the commands (that Andy referenced) exactly where I expected in the keyboard shortcut editor, but my frustration arose when I was unable to actually change any of the shortcut commands.

After a bit more google searching I stumbled across this:
    https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1570181

Long story short—all sequence panels (and audio track mixer, in my case) must be closed before the keyboard shortcuts for them can be changed or added. Quite the obscure requirement, but that did it for me.

    Hope that helps.

  • I’ve had this same issue since Friday. Uninstalled/re-installed the entire suite 4 times; trashed prefs, reset layouts, added second (and third) monitor, NOTHING is working.

Can’t speak for the other brands, but the two ports on the Pani’s accomplish different things. One controls Iris and Focus, the other controls the zoom motor. They can both be plugged in, or you can just use one (like the zoom).

It should be noted that they will override the on-camera controls…e.g. if the iris/focus bit is plugged in, the camera will NOT autofocus, and must be manually adjusted using the remote.

    Hope it helps.

I find YouSendIt to be fairly easy to use, though that’s through our studio’s paid account. You can upload/send many files at once (shift-click selections), or of course use the zipped folder approach.

The best free alternative that I’ve found when I send personal stuff is DropSend. Accepts files up to 2GB (unlike YouSendIt’s free-version limit of 50 MB.) But the free bit is limited to 5 sends/month.

[Gary Huff] “If the Mac Mini 2012 had a NVIDIA 650M in it”

    First thing I looked for!

Coulda been the greatest “budget” system yet. It even retains the FW800 port!

alas, it is too ….discrete…. for me

I would say the director is like the Editor, except he’s actually on set. His responsibility is to make sure the message is delivered, the same way the Editor’s job is to make sure it’s coherent.

Or you could put it this way….When the footage is delivered to Post, and some critical piece is missing/jumbled/down-right-wrong, he’s the one who gets blamed, cuz it was his responsibility to make sure everything necessary was all there correctly before calling the shoot wrapped.

Or in the case of a one-man-band that shoots and edits, you look in the mirror and say, “get your S#*! together!”

    🙂

[Simon Hyland] ” I thought, okay, I’ll just join them up and then hopfully either slpit them again, or just use marks to transition between the two grades….”

Yep. But you HAVE to work off the Master timeline. You can’t split or join clips on any alternate timelines.

[Walter Soyka] “I think a product like SCRATCH Lab might be a better comparison from a workflow perspective”

Ok, you got me there. Workflow is quite different.

To Bill’s original point/question, is FCPX akin to LR….I think it’s a definite NO.

You could say any program that is non-destructive/database oriented is comparative to X’s metadata-tagging etc approach. But isn’t that really just oversimplifying any app that uses a computer’s strengths?

To speak to the difference/relationship between LR and Photoshop, I would say that compares better to a Premier/AE workflow…you edit (organize, color correct/stylize) in Premier/Lightroom, and for more intensive and specific work on a shot or picture, you would go to Photoshop/After Effects. (Obviously they can all be used individually or as a group.)

[Walter Soyka] “Lightroom encompasses everything a photographer might do in a darkroom; you’ve got negative storage, browsing and selection (like with a light table), and development and printing. “

    Yup.

The best comparison of Lightroom to a video program would not be an NLE, but a color grading app, like Resolve.
