The answer is to not go to screening in uncontrolled spaces. I have found so much atrociousness in commercial cinemas let alone convention halls. I honestly just can’t attend many screening because of that.

I use my laptop and a proven projector to run a short film festival in my little rural town. At a recent screening the film makers said it had looked better than almost every venue they had screened at and much closer to the original.

The secret is to get into the projector menus and turn all the useless features off. Get the contrast and brightness balanced and focus the lens. I have no idea how people get to turn on VIVID then try to tweak the gamma settings. They just seem to stumble through the menus hitting random buttons. If you have time you just have to get in and turn everything back to a normal setting and then go from there.

  • [Ron Lindeboom] “Please feel free to ignore the fact that this forum by its name has had a totally negative effect on Creative COW because people come into here expecting it to have something to do with Apple Final Cut Pro X and yet it is often little if anything to do with it at this point in time.”

I think the issues with negativity may have been exacerbated by the first change of name that I amongst other deemed unnecessary at the time. By removing ‘or not’ from the original title it no longer, to the casual visitor, gave that context of it being a debate forum.

I think the Cow has been extremely tolerant of this forum and I and other regulars who have stayed the distance would not want it to be detrimental to the Cow which has been an absolutely vital resource to our industry. It’s saved our hides many times and we have generously supped from the teats of its collective knowledge. None of us want this forum put out to pasture so if we seem reluctant to be herded into our new paddock we bear no ill will to our benevolent farmer. Hopefully the grass will be greener and our neighbors will complain less about the midnight mooing.

This reminds me of the old days of Yellow Pages directories. In a bid to be first in the alphabetically sorted and in memory of those ridiculous attempts I feel like offering Aaaaaaaardvark NLE Debates (and plumbing services).

However I would go with the most accurate of the approved names (indeed the only one remotely accurate).
    An NLE Debate Forum

    Over to you Bessie.

[Shawn Miller] “I’m also really hoping that BMD doesn’t adopt ProResRAW while deprecating CinemaDNG,”

Me too. I feel no confidence in codecs that are at the whim of Apple. I would love to avoid Quicktime frankly and just stay with mxf so if BM does restore DNx codecs, I hope they go with the mxf wrapper too. We might finally see an end to gamma issues with QT.

  • I feel the new name misses the mark because this is not a forum where we talk about Apple. We debate often with passion about all NLEs on all platforms. So there is not much talk about Apple per se going on but a lot of shouting about the pros and cons of all NLEs on all platforms.

Even taking the original ‘or not’ out of the name changed the flavor so I agree that this name will shift the focus of this forum to something other than what it is and has been. If that is not the intention then “NLE Debates” is probably a better descriptor. Honestly Apple Talk sounds like a help desk for iOS trouble shooting.

[Brad Busse] “Is there a chart showing which features standalone Fusion has which Resolve Fusion does not?”

I would expect Blackmagic to have that somewhere on their support page.

[Shawn Miller] “I always use eXFAT, but DNx is grayed out for me. What firmware version are you running and which Ursa Mini? I’m on the original UM4.6k.”

Same model as me. I’ll check and let you know. The camera has been on ProRes to match a long form doco I have been doing over the past three years. A friend borrowed the camera earlier this year and was shooting DNx I think after I updated to the latest software.

EDIT: Yes you’re right. That’s a shame. I updated to 4.8 a while back but the DNx job must have been before that. I was thinking of ditching ProRes on future jobs but I guess I’m stuck with it.

I still don’t have a justification for having that much grunt in a laptop as I have all the grunt rack mounted in the machine room. I do have a i7gen8 13″ Dell laptop with USB-c, 2 x USB3.1,SD card slot and HDMI 2 and it runs Linux Mint so I have a powerful enough laptop to play 4k H264 videos direct to projectors when required or just stream Netflix etc. It’s my office and front end to the internet.

It is also handy to sometimes do some background tasks like batch converting audio files into 48k wavs. I am not a fan of just using QWERTY keyboards for editing/ grading etc and I hate that the scratch pad gets in the way of the keyboard. Honestly I would buy a laptop without a scratch pad as I always plug in a mouse. But using a laptop to edit or grade or sound post? No thanks

Mine does. You have to format the CFAST card to ExFat.
