Tell your IT guys that Mac is a variant of Linux (which is basically true) so networking is easy and reliability is greater than Win boxes. Tell them the hardware is already state of the art and doesn’t need constant upgrade except perhaps RAM and graphics cards. Tell them you don’t need anti virus software that needs constant updating.

You can also tell them that in my facility we have four Win XP machines, two Macs and two Linux boxes. We have no IT people because you don’t need them if you take the time to learn the basics about the tools you work with. The Win machines require a lot more maintenance and were the most difficult to setup.

Finally you can tell them that their job is to learn to maintain the tools that are required to get the real work done. They are support, not the creators of the actual product that you produce so they have to learn to manage the tools, not determine them. There is no reason why any IT pro with basic intelligence would worry about integrating a Mac into a system that already has Win and Linux boxes.

If they haven’t the skills to do the job, then replace them. IT facists are a dime a dozen. Chose real IT support people as carefully as you choose your edit systems.

March 25, 2010 at 11:02 pm in reply to: FCP and z7 camera audio issue?

You are confusing bit depth with sample rate. As John has pointed out 16 bit(depth) 48Khz (sample rate) 2 channel is the correct setting.

Go to the dual quad nehalem 2.9 with lots of RAM and watch your machine last a few years longer. It may cost more up front but over the working life of the machine you will have the same or less cost and better performance.

  • Check your settings in Color to make sure the output render matches the frame size of your source material.

Why do you need to render audio? If it was correctly converted to 48khz before going into your timeline, there should be no need for rendering.

  • I’ve had no issues with ProRes 1920 x 1080 on FW800 drives (mostly Lacie & WD).

Don’t know anyone using the MOTU. What are you using to monitor that 1080p is so important. If you are using the card to feed to a video deck, you will need i or psf output anyway.

March 24, 2010 at 11:55 pm in reply to: Convert PAL 16:9 to NTSC DVD?

PAL to NTSC requires a frame rate conversion. There are various methods to do this and they all have been discussed here before at length.

Firstly search this forum as there are detailed instructions on how to use Nattress plugins or frame controls in Compressor to achieve exactly what you want. DVD SP can’t do standards conversion.

March 24, 2010 at 11:52 pm in reply to: Troubleshooting tapes and capture problems

If you are getting the dropouts when monitoring the picture & sound in the camera, then you will not be able to capture them without those breaks, regardless of if you use FCP or iMovie.

The fact that they don’t occur in the same place means that if you capture the same clips a few times with timecode, can you edit between the various captures to create shots with no dropouts? Tedious I know but the fact that the dropouts are not always in the same place gives you some hope of stitching together a version.

Reusing tapes shot in HDV in a DV camera is a recipe for disaster.

Are you exporting a quicktime movie or quicktime conversion? I have seen the same unrender characteristic when doing a quicktime conversion.
