It rewrites the file and changes the sample rate but being uncompressed there is no real data change if the levels etc are untouched.

I must admit, I stick to the edit page, but then I’m not often editing a story from scratch, just tweaking an edit when I grade & online. However next week I am putting my edit hat on for a short doco so I’m determined to try the Cut page out. I suspect I will be jumping to the Fairlight page to edit the audio where the ability to use layers and not worry about linking between audio & video makes it so much easier for me to cut dialog.
I’m not familiar with editing in X so I can’t give any meaningful comparison.

PCM audio is uncompressed so there is no re-encoding. If there is no gain, dynamics or EQ applied then it is not processed at all when Resolve exports. However Vimeo will not only encode it to AAC it will also sample rate convert. My advice would be to do the sample rate convert yourself and export your file as PCM 24/48khz if you are happy to then let Vimeo do the compression encode. 48khz is standard SR for video and the default in Resolve.
ProRes like many I frame compressed formats is pretty much lossless, at least to the human eye. Vimeo will crunch it down to H264 so you will see some changes to things like grain which is basically noise regardless of the codec you choose to upload.

I can still put my license on a second machine as I never did till now.”Yes that is what I would try under your circumstances. The database is usually on your system drive unless you changed the default location. This file can be copied and used to overwrite the new Resolve install. You shouldn’t need to open the version of Resolve you have on the M2, just copy the database.
Backing up the whole database each day can get messy as it gets bigger. My practice is to backup my individual .drp project files regularly as I work on them and the whole database monthly. The bonus to doing the regular project backup is that I rename it, adding the date or other details so I can restore it along side the current version of the project if I find I have need to reference the earlier version.
My backups go to a Raided NAS and a separate internal HD.

I am doing a RED project at the moment and the playback is set to 1/4 res. It looks like the default is it goes to full on pause. I don’t know if you would want it any different to that. I didn’t even look to see if it can be set differently. You might want to search the manual.

Resolve can output a video file with multiple audio channels. Quicktime is basically dead and QT10 player is dreadful.
Your friend might have better luck testing audio gear using polywav files which can easily be made from multiple mono files using freeware like Wave Agent https://www.sounddevices.com/product/wave-agent/

Do you want just a still image from the video? If so go to the deliver page, find a frame you want to export. Mark I & O one that frame and select tiff export. That way you can mark and render multiple still frames at the full res of the footage and bake in your grade. Mark multiple frames and make a render queue. If you want you can then import those tiffs into a project to do whatever you want with them or export to Photoshop etc.
I like that Resolve doesn’t require the making of a still to create a freeze.

I’m a small operator but I had no problem understanding the methodology of saving projects as part of a database. The database is a historical inheritance so don’t expect BM to think about changing it.
As an operator it is possible for you to create a database per project if you want. You can easily backup your database and individual projects. Personally I find it easy to work with and it’s nice to be able to backup multiple projects in one operation. It was very useful when I decided to have an install of both Version 15 and 16beta a few months ago. BM are not leaving you in the dark unless you think reading the manual or learning about software is not for the “small guy”.
