  • How to grab stills?

Posted by Robert Withers on August 10, 2019 at 3:04 am

    Hi,
    A second try at posting this . . .
I import a film into a new project in Resolve 15 (Macbook Air, Mohave 10.14), go to the View menu to grab some stills and all the Stills actions are grayed out.
What do I need to do differently to get this function to work?
    Thanks,
    Robert

Oh, sorry. I see there’s a Blackmagic Design and a separate Davinci Resolve forum.

Stills are used to capture your color correction settings, and store them internally for other shots or projects.
You have to put them into a timeline, and then grab them from the color page.

Sounds like you want to export freeze frames?

    Thanks, Glenn.
Yes that’s what I wanted. To export still images, otherwise known as freeze frames in other software and film lingo.
I should have searched for freeze frames in the manual.
Got it done in Premiere, maybe more slowly.
    Cheers,
    Robert

I would grab stills in the Gallery — option-command-G on the Mac — then right click on the still and export it in whatever still format you need. Be aware you should make sure the session settings are at the same resolution as your source material.

    Hello all
Well, I couldn’t get anything to work to make a still image, like you would make of a single frame of a movie to us as a single image, not a freeze frame to run for a certain duration. Options are grayed out in Resolve 15. Nothing under View, nothing under Clip, nothing under Gallery.
    Read the fine manual.
    Also tried Option-Command-G.
    Nothing happens.
Guess I’ve got to go back and put in my 10 hours to learn the interface.
    Sigh,
    Robert

Do you want just a still image from the video? If so go to the deliver page, find a frame you want to export. Mark I & O one that frame and select tiff export. That way you can mark and render multiple still frames at the full res of the footage and bake in your grade. Mark multiple frames and make a render queue. If you want you can then import those tiffs into a project to do whatever you want with them or export to Photoshop etc.

I like that Resolve doesn’t require the making of a still to create a freeze.

Maybe these are controls that are only available under the Color Work Space and not under the Edit work space. Will experiment with this next time. . .
    Thanks for reading, though,

    Hi
You can grab a still in the color page. I have the Studio (paid) version. Maybe this function is only available in the paid version.
If you have to buy the Studio version do it only direct from BM and NOT the Apple App Store.
For some strange reason the App Store Version has a slightly restricted version. For you with Still Grabs request, the restriction is that they are available only as dpx or drx files – NOT jpg or png.
    Best
    Peter
