You can look in your settings (look for the gear wheel icon bottom right) and see if you can change settings there.

When you set up a timeline you can change from defaults by selecting the Custom tab which should now allow you to set a different sample rate. If you can’t change your existing timeline, try creating a new timeline then copy paste to that timeline

Check out the latest release version of Resolve 16.1 . Listed is “Support for 96 KHz and 192 KHz sample rates at a project level for DaVinci Resolve Studio”

    Might just solve your problem

I was beginning to fret as there hadn’t been a Resolve update for 5 weeks but they just released 16.1 . The list of improvements and new features is pretty significant. Compared to this long waited for FCPX update, which seems to be mostly about prep for new Mac hardware, how does the community feel about the pace and improvements to X by comparison?

Are the files wav or broadcast wav with embedded timecode? If wav, then they have no frame rate. If bwf then you need to make sure the timecode is 23.976 or 24 as most professional recorders like Sound Devices can record either.

Sound Devices have free software -Wave Agent – that lets you change embedded timecode so if the bwfs are not recorded at the correct rate then that can be fixed. It will also accurately tell you what the recorded rate is.

Secondly does your project rate match the bwf frame rate? And does the camera original timecode rate match the project and audio rate? If not then you will also have sync issues. So once you determine the frame rates are all matching and reporting accurately then there might also be an issue with the way you are trying to sync, but I suggest sorting those frame rate issues first.

October 15, 2019 at 1:41 am in reply to: Michael Cioni + frame io

Redshark reported this as- “Frame.io hires Michael Cioni, thereby changing everything we know about workflows”. I don’t see how this will be. The cloud is taking it’s sweet time to be an integral part of post workflows but I don’t see the problem as tools like Frame.io, Vimeo, WeTransfer etc letting us down. The real let down for many is just access to cheap enough, fast enough internet to make the option of uploading camera rushes to the cloud instead of using cheap hard drives.

Honestly in my country it is not even a race to see if 4TB of data can be uploaded faster than flying a hard drive from one side of the country to the other. Given we are sold on the idea that we can swan around editing anywhere on a laptop, internet access, speed and affordability needs to be compared to a cheap portable drive. Sure long distance collaborative workflows would be nice and cloud based storage of rushes makes this possible but I’m not being held back by services like Vimeo or Frame.io as much as cost/ speed benefits of fast enough internet access.

I think “Cloud” has been hyped for long enough for us to realise there are bottlenecks that have nothing to do with software like Frame.io. I’m sure Michael Cioni is a whizz at organising sensible and efficient workflows for many applications but changing everything we know?

You may have to export a file back into AVID to export the video with 96khz files. I would check the manual and other online forums, especially the Blackmagic Resolve forum to see if 96khz exports are possible. It may be codec specific so refer to my other post about deliverable codecs

Delivery files for me are based on what is broadcast acceptable. For an art installation you need to ask the gallery or museum what their gear plays and deliver what they specify.

Personally I would not make a deliverable file using ProRes4444. I’ve never used that as a deliverable file format either and when I used to deal with ProRes, I often found 4444 was a poor choice due to gamma incompatibility on playback in other players or edit systems.

48khz is the standard for digital audio with video. Are you expected to delivering a final master to any broadcaster or cinema with 96khz audio? I’ve never heard of that being an accepted format. Unless you have a specific delivery requiring a non standard audio format, Resolve is simply giving you legal output.

I have to ask why the original audio was recorded at 96khz?

  • Nice outcome. Thanks for sharing as it will help others
